work, music, stuff

Yay for working 240 hours in May! Weirdly, I'm kind of serious about that. I always seem to feel better when I have a couple of projects to sink myself into, mind, body and soul. Not only does it keep me out of trouble but there's something incredibly satisfying about watching something, whether it be an essay, a program at work, or whatever, take shape. And there's always the horrifyingly egotastic voice that insists that only I can do it right. Is there anyone who isn't infested by this particular brain troll?

The downside is that it hasn't left me much time for fannish things. I see myself feedbacking and posting maniacally in the next couple of weeks. Yet, somehow I've managed to hit 4500 words on my Steve/Tony fic. crimsonquills, I'm looking at you.

My scheduled happy time of the week is an Evil Dead marathon on Thursday, followed by Iron Man. Now that's a schedule that will make or break a friendship. I'm introducing a friend to the ambrosial Evil Dead saga, my fantabulastic jambayla, and Iron Man, all in one day. O.o

Aaaaand in the category of insanely cool, a friend is going to be a part of a lecture series on the Canadian-ness of Canadian art. He's scheduled for the same night as Gordon Lightfoot, and I get to go. What does it say about me that I'm more excited about meeting Gordon Lightfoot, than I was by meeting Gerard Butler?

Also, did you know that you can watch Wonder Woman online?

Songs of the month (so far):

List heavily geared toward stuff I can sing along to at work.

Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart
Tokyo Police Club - Tessellate
the Constantines - Shower of Stones
Cold Play - Violet Hill
The Constantines - Hard Feelings
A Punk - Vampire Weekend, kind of reminds me of early Police?
Aginst Me! - Stop, holy Jesus it's catchy

Absolutely not songs of the month (so far):

Weezer - Pork and Beans, AKA Rivers Cuomo Has Something Wrong With His Brain
USS - Hollow Point Sniper Hyperbole, because it's not cute anymore, and is starting to annoy
Die Mannequin - Do it or Die, because it's yawnfully ordinary

I might just empty my bank account this summer. So many freaking good shows. NXNE, Raconteurs, Death Cab, Constantines, City and Colour, V Fest, Rodgers Picnic, Warped Tour, Edgefest and so on. Maybe I should organize a concert deathmatch. Best three of five?

Quasi-related (kind of?) to the above. Prime Minister Harper announced a 20-year, multibillion-dollar plan to strengthen Canada's military, which includes the purchase of new aircraft, armoured vehicles, ships and helicopters, and a goal to expand the Forces to 100,000.

Matt Good had this to say:

If anyone were looking for an example of just how truly idiotic the man running this country is, look no further than this quote…

“If a country wants to be taken seriously in the world, it must have the capacity to act. It’s that simple. Otherwise, you forfeit your right to be a player. You’re the one chattering on the sideline that everyone smiles at, but no one listens to.”

Is that what being taken seriously in the world demands - military might? If so, then we forfeit our ability to condemn those that use violence as a means to an end. If to be ‘a player’ one must possess significant military capabilities, then who are we to condemn anyone that adheres to that line of thinking and the inevitable application of force?

To be a player, Mr. Harper, you must first examine what and whom you are playing with. And if your conclusion is that to be taken seriously on the world stage requires a military capability that is substantial enough to placate those that view such a requirement as a prerequisite for inclusion, then you must also accept the reality that those that are willing to use violence must be graced the same allowance for the exact same reason, no matter who they are.

Which I am going to savour. I'm not in total agreement with him, but as usual he's a pleasure to read.

Yeah, I'm probably going to drop fifty bucks to see him again. Le sigh.
