From Eroica With Love Volume 14

I have a love-hate relationship with CMX. On one hand, they're publishing Eroica. On the other hand, they make mistakes and the releases take ages.

Volume 13 came out sometime in July, and I though Volume 14 was coming out in November of this year. Then I found that it was coming out on the 21th of July, 2009.

Maybe it's because I live in Canada. Is

First thing: If you want to make a picture about the CMX translation with its good and bad aspects I highly recommend Mprices reviews about the first ten volumes ( will there be more, Marg? ):

Second thing: July. 2009. I read it now on Amazon, too. If it is really true, them my fan-me says OH-MI-GOSH and faints. Really, Is FEwL THAT unsucessfull? Does it sell that bad? Can we be lucky that the manga isn´t cancelled yet? Maybe I´m too subjective and uninformed here, but to me it seems every other CMX manga series gets a quicker release than Eroica. Stuff like "Moon Child" or "Cipher" started much later but there are already more than 10 volumes in English, "Musashi No.9" just *outran* Eroica. Sigh. Oh well, don´t panic, maybe it is really only false alarm .

@janxspirit: Gruesse nach Deutschland! I got my Eroica mangas in Germany so far on this way: two times as deliveries from amazon.de, one time as a deliverie from the German book shop company "Thalia" and one time, volume 4, from a comic shop in Nuremberg ("Ultra Comix"). They have some voumes there, but only a few. At the moment I´m an intern in London, and my working place is not far away from maybe the biggest comic shop in London, "Forbidden Planet". I already went there are couple of times and ... the Eroica-manga situation is here only a bit better, even there are not all volumes in the bookshelf! Another sign how bad-selling FEwL is...? (SOB)

I have all the english Eroica volumes, and I've read up to volume 17 (some of it, anyway, and Volume 16 was missing bits). But there are no scanlations of the rest of Volume 13.

Musashi 9 is bad. I don't like it. As for how bad Eroica sells...it is thirty years old. I guess it's pretty amazing that it lasted that long.

... Do you mean it like " pretty amazing that CMX gave us at least 13 volumes, I think this July-stuff just means the series will be absolutely cancelled soon." or like " pretty amazing that Eroica is wanted in general, even after 30 years - and even when it´s only in Japan."?

...The more I think about it - there are quite a lot of manga classics which seem still madly beloved in their homecountry ( as far as I can say that ) and sometimes they also abroad -still! - quite popular. I mean, heard about that Dragon Ball Hollywood remake...?!
I won´t start with other older but popular stuff like Star Wars, Star Trek or ...eh... Led Zeppelin. :)

As for the FEwL scanlations: I´ve got a splitted relationship towards them. On the one side I think it´s quite interesting that there is a comparison existing, on the other one side I´m one of those serious bores who think of scanlations as unfair to manga artist, publisher & Co, especially if there is an official release but the scanlations are still circulating.

Pretty amazing that people still want Eroica after thirty years, is what I mean. I hope don't think that CMX will cancel Eroica...merely because I adore the manga and would love if it had a wider fandom.

I don't think that publishing scanlations is unfair to the manga artists, actually. Even if I had read all of Eroica, it would have to be terribly, horribly, unbelievably bad to make me stop buying them. In the case of CMX, the rate at which they release their mangas is just amazing. Scanlations are all we have to last us through the Eroica-less months.

That´s nice, but if I try to look at the whole picture ... I´ve got no statistics, but I´ve got the heavy guess that more than just a few manga volumes in the shops stay untouched because they were already existing as scanlations. I mean in general, not only FEwL. I guess now in modern Internettimes and with a oh-so-empty wallet more than just a few do without the unspoken rule(s) "If you checked out a scanlation or a fansub and you liked it, you will buy it if it comes out legally! And you´ll stop spreading copies of the scanlations / fansubs!". Anime House, a German anime distributor, just wrote a whole article about it, pointing to the fact that some German anime distributors stopped production with the the argument, the fansub market on the internet made it too unprofitable. I presume other factors played maybe also a role, but still.

Like you, I don't have any statistics, but anyone who is a fan of manga tends to want to collect them. And the ones who aren't really fans read some scanlations, and just go sort of "Enh" when a new volume comes out. They aren't really the customers the publishing company hopes to get; they want fans who will keep coming back for more. And especially in the case of Eroica, because it's such an obscure manga, the scanlations are really a way of advertising. That was how I got really and truly introduced to Eroica, so that may just be me. The Internet has the advantage of being able to reach out to a huge number of people. Since CMX doesn't publish in Malaysia, I probably wouldn't have heard about Eroica.

But still, it might be different from you. It's just that everyone I know would rather have the manga actually in their hands, even if they read it online.
