Looking for the right one

Looking for a job is kind of a nerve-wracking experience, particularly when one is short on money (as I am). I want to get a job where I enjoy the work, hopefully know this is where God wants me to be, and has potential for growth. No small order, eh? I suppose it starts with thinking about how I serve God best, and growing off of that. I guess I'm just a little exhausted looking at line after line of jobs. There certainly isn't any shortage of jobs, just tyring to find the right one can feel a little overwhelming.

Case in point? I've received probably like 6 different emails from various insurance agencies asking me if I'm up for a career in selling *you insert your least favorite* insurance. Now, I'm all for selling a product if it benefits a group, business or person, but for the love of Pete I do not want to sell insurance! I could see myself selling a good product, like, say, outdoor equipment, or Subarus, or a political campaign, but I really want to make sure what I'm selling counts. Insurance is just a little hard for me to get behind right now after the experience I've had. I know it's a growth industry (who doesn't feel insecure about their future? Buy insurance and it'll solve the problem! (I'm being facetious.)), but just the thought of trying to convince somebody to buy a product that really only acts as risk preventance is hard for me to swallow.

I really do enjoy believing in the things I work for, play hard at, and live for. Maybe that's why I'm just unsatisfied with trying for the average administrative assistant position again. I want more out of life, and being in an office and answering phones all day would be frustrating to me. I'm rambling, so I had better cut it off soon, but here's the update: I'm meeting with a political contact (somebody running for something...I'll tell you later if it gets anywhere) on Tuesday for an interview, which I am cautiously optimistic about. Oh, and I applied for a handful more jobs today in the range of a person whose job experience mainly involves administration. The most exciting thing to happen? I talked with a friend's sister who has great connections in the world of consulting (governmental, financial, you name it), and has offered to try and hook me up with a sweet company. I don't know where it would lead, but I would absolutely love to incorporate my writing skills and desire to be intellectually challenged (not just asked to memorize a data entry system, mind you, but really challenged) into a fulfilling career.

Oh, and Jurassic Park is a sweet movie. Word.

On a more personal note, American Idol ended in a rather bittersweet note for me. Taylor Hicks as American Idol? I just don't really get why people are so in love with the dude's voice. "Yo dawg, you worked it out, man! You were 'da bomb! This is the real Taylor Hicks, y'all!" Perhaps Randy Jackson's mellifluous verbiage has made a difference after all. Then again, Katharine McPhee has all the originality and singing ability of your average beautiful babe, plus a few voice lessons. I'm not saying she's bad by any means, I'm just saying she's not the most amazing voice talent to ever hit the stage. But, beauty and silver hair have won the day.

You know the thing that bothered me the most about the results? That a total of 63 million votes were cast for that single last episode, which is more votes than any American President has ever received in a winning bid for the White House (I realize that a bunch of those are repeat votes, but I still think the number is staggering, and a sign of what people are willing to commit to). I just wish that people would spend a few minutes figuring out what is going on around them in terms of their own government, in order to understand what is at stake.

I'm not a very good example, though, as I just got my driver's license in Oregon, thereby missing voting in the primaries. Yes, I missed voting. Egad. I promise not to ever do that again...it's just so hard to motivate oneself when it's basically a 4 way runoff between who's the best liberal glad-hander in Multnomah county. Until Later,
