formal or outrageous attire only!

on our way from the funeral to the Pfennings' home, one of my friends asked "Did you find your mind wandering to what you'll say about other people who probably have 30-50 years left before we need to think about it?"  yes i did.  then we got talking about our own funerals a little.

my friends made fun of me for dressing like an old lady.  they were dressed pretty casually, the one heckling me the most in black pants and a purple hippy shirt.
i was in a tasteful, simple black dress, black stockings, and a strand of pearls.
my dad agreed when i mused "I'm probably the only one of my friends who went shopping specifically to find a dress for funerals, huh?"
i'd been on this quest since my grandmother died in 2002.  i found a dress for her memorial service, but it was a little too fancy for my taste.  i finally found the right one in a vintage shop in New York in maybe 2006.  Jess left me to wander The Village one day while she had class.  this dress is *exactly* what i was looking for, which is pretty crazy.

anyway, i said to my heckler:
"My funeral will definitely have a dress code."  she snorted "It will be formal or outrageous attire only!"  it took a moment for that to register, then she cracked up and approved.

in fact, she said my funeral ought to be followed by a drag pageant or something of equal spectacle.  that's one of the best compliments i've ever gotten!

ettiquette, idea, musing
