backstory:
a former prof of mine was engaged to a mexican man from a wealthy family. she told us that in mexico one can build a mansion for $50,000. she told us that they lived there for half the year and she was served brekkist in bed by servants. she also didn't know why people make a fuss about illegal immigrants being paid "Only a dollar a day" because in mexico they'd be lucky to make that in a week.

i was outraged by what this woman said and ranted about it. i understand that americans hiring in mexico can't pay an american minimum wage, the ecnomies are too drastically different. but why can't americans pay a dollar a day? but i worried that i wasn't in the right. i don't know anything about the situation or politics or whatever else could even go into it.

today my history prof, whom i like very much, closed his lecture with a mention of something similar, but from my point of view.
after class i told him this story and asked whether i'm right, laying out my insecurities. he told me that he thinks i'm absolutely right in my thoughts and that sometimes gut reactions are to be trusted. even if one doesn't know the numbers in a situation sometimes one's gut says there's just something fundamentally wrong here.
