I'm totally going to be working here starting next Saturday at noon.
But not exactly there. Not with Sue (as in the Sue, the T-Rex) or the Tsavo Lions... I'm starting off in this pretty cool exhibit called the Pawnee Earth Lodge. It's really cool. They built a real earth lodge in there! And it has a cool interactive ceiling that projects constellations in the Pawnee cosmology. Here's what the a Pawnee Earth Lodge looks like:
Cool stuff, huh? Mary Ann, the volunteer coordinator, goes to Oklahoma every year for the big summer celebration and told me she takes a bunch of volunteers down there with her for "Pow Wow Time!". During the interview, I noticed her walls were decorated in Native American regalia, including a funky dress she described as "contemporary Pawnee dress." She told me the Pawnee exhibit was her favorite because she feels like she's being hugged every time she goes in there.
After I learn the ins and outs of being a docent there, I get to move back and forth between the Earth Lodge and the Ancient Americas exhibit, which is equally rad. The ceramics they have are just amazing! Oh. Annnnd. The perks are awesome. My ID gets me in to all the Chicago Park District Museums for free. And sometimes museums in other cities for free too! Woot woot!
