i think i just won over the Fulbright committee. my favorite moment was when i was asked:
"that all sounds great, Bradford, tip-top, but honestly, tell us. . . why should the State Department award you thousands of dollars so that you can go abroad to study something illegal?"
"because it's fun!. . .sir."
laughter. . . at the end of the hour, the eagle-faced scholar with the fine silvery nose-hairs let a wry smile slip from his mouth, remarking that my project proposal was "a stretch for [the committee], but. . .a convincing stretch."
one of the women on the committee told me after the interview: "that was like the 60's. it reminded me of a friend who used to hang out with Marcuse. we could talk for hours!"
then she thanked me. unholy shit! this might work after all.
what a relief.
now i have two weeks of "real" work to catch up on. i'm not praying for myself.
