Terribly sorry about the tardiness of this post, I had it half finished last night and then I fell asleep, heh.
Gonna start this off on a beautiful, depressing, wonderful note with this video, which I reblogged on tumblr but am also posting here for maximum viewing access:

It's not a complete video, I couldn't find the full thing (for some reason the ending of JKR's speech is cut off) but there was enough to make me cry, lol.

Day fourteen: What you think makes the Harry Potter series so amazing
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS DAY, LET ME TELL YOU.
So this is my chance to wax poetical about the beauty and magic of my Harry Potter verse OTP.
Most of you know that I'm a multishipper at heart. Every single fandom I'm in, I can't bring myself to ship just one pairing. Actually, I think Harry Potter may be the only fandom where I have a , well, favourite pairing among the pairings I ship. And when I say favourite, I mean it makes my heart feel a million more feelings than the others, I have shipped it since pretty much the beginning (even without knowing it) and never wavered, and all other ships dim in comparison to it except maybe Mulder/Scully because of dat fucking chemistry BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT RIGHT NOW.
Harry/Ron/Hermione is what the books are about, albeit as an amazing friendship. I mean, really, when it comes down to it, the HP series isn't only about Harry, it's about his relationship to the other two and the obstacles they face and overcome. That's why it's my favourite ship in HP: because I ship it just as hard as a friendship as I do as a non-platonic relationship.
Back before I ever got into fandom or into shipping, I used to surf around Mugglenet.com daily for news about the upcoming books/movies/events. That's how I discovered the... how can I put this delicately... ~~ minor differences in opinion~~ between the Harry/Hermione shippers and the Ron/Hermione shippers. And I remember thinking that although I loved the dynamic between both of those pairings, I didn't really think either of them would work. Ron and Hermione... they just never seem to really get each other, you know? Hermione doesn't understand why Ron can't just use his head for once, and Ron doesn't seem to notice that Hermione has feelings at all half the time. As to Harry and Hermione, although I think they're adorable, I don't think they'd be a very warm couple, if you know what I mean. Of the trio, they're more introverted and reserved than Ron is, imo, and I thought that, while they'd be good for each other and happy together, something would be missing and they'd both feel it. I'm pretty sure Harry says it himself at some point in the books, during one of Ron and Hermione's fights; hanging out with Hermione is great, and she's a wonderful friend, but he still misses Ron, and the fun and humour he brings to any situation. (I'm not making this up, I just don't remember which book it's from. Possibly during the Ron/Lavender thing? I don't remember :/)
So that was the start of it, for me, when I realised that neither of the two major ships really worked for me. And then fanfiction happened. And Harry/Ron entered the ring, and I wondered if maybe this one would work for me, since the other two didn't. And while I think that they'd have a wonderful, passionate, playful relationship, it wouldn't last very long. I adore their interaction in the books, and I love the little moments of them supporting each other and protecting each other, but they both have short tempers, and they can both be a little oblivious sometimes. Ron sometimes has trouble taking responsibility (see him shirking dumping Lavender, etc), which would probably piss Harry off to no end, given his whole thing about taking responsibility for your actions. On the flipside, Harry has this unfortunate thing of being the center of attention a lot, and that pisses Ron off in canon, so imagine how bad that'd go if they were in a relationship. Nah, this one didn't work for me either.
By this point I was getting pretty damn frustrated. These three are my favourite characters, (excepting Snape and I just don't ship him with anybody tbh), and so help me god I was going to find a ship that worked for me. So I dabbled in H/D, Hr/D, H/Luna, Hr/G, etc etc etc. And I liked all of them, and I ship all of them to a that'd-be-hot-and-they-have-chemistry-and-their-dynamic-is-neat kind of degree.
It kind of amuses me how long it took me to discover R/H/Hr. I blame it on three things:
- It's actually a pretty rare pair for HP fandom, as far as I can tell
- At that point, I was mostly reading over at ff.net (lol, I KNOW), and you can only pick two characters as the focus to refine your search. Not ideal for finding gen/friendship/romance for all three of my faves.
- I'm kind of slow sometimes.
I don't think it even hit me as an option until I was doing an all-series reread about a month before the release of DH1. All of a sudden, it just clicked in my head, that Ron and Harry and Hermione are happiest when they're all together, so they should just live together forever and make out a lot and live happily ever after. And then I went and saw the movie, and let me tell you, that movie is really fucking shippy. I swear there was a moment for every major ship in HP fandom, and for a few of the minor ones, too. There wasn't just a moment for R/H/Hr, though, there was a whole freaking movie for that ship. Watch it and tell me David Yates doesn't ship it, I dare you.
What it comes down to, for me, is that wonderful balance that has been the focus of the books since a mountain troll decided to smash around in a Hogwarts bathroom. In the first book, Harry and Ron are, frankly, reckless and rash and impulsive together. Then they befriend Hermione, and she adds her rationality, stability, and intelligence to the mix, and suddenly they're all a little safer, a little happier, a little more whole. I love the dynamic between then. An easy way to think of it would be like in the season four finale of Buffy, when Giles, Willow, Xander, and Buffy blend themselves together to become stronger than ever, sort of Circle Of Magic-style. I don't remember who, but someone says something like Giles is the brains, Willow is the power, Buffy is the strength, and Xander is the heart. The relationship between Harry, Ron, and Hermoine could be considered in terms like that, where Ron is the heart, Hermione is the brains, and Harry is the strength -- each of their defining characteristics. I think that's sort of like reducing a fraction to lowest terms, if you would, because each of them has a little of each characteristic in them, but that's what's strongest. And it works, they work, amazingly well. Hermione slows Harry and Ron down, makes them think, and makes them stronger. Ron lightens Harry and Hermione up, brings his easy cheer and humour into the mix. Harry raises Hermione and Ron up, helps them fulfill their potential for greatness. I think it's really quite beautiful.
It's pretty obvious to me that I have a thing for partners/friends becoming more. All of my favourite pairings start as friends, and I'm just as happy reading friendship fic as romance fic. For me, that's what Harry/Ron/Hermione is; three friends, three amazing, loving friends, who have the potential to become more. The fact that I find all three of the main actors extremely attractive is just the icing on the proverbial cake.
