rock and roll weekend

This past weekend was a special weekend. Why? It was Carlos’ new girlfriend’s first time reading this! Also, it saw the visitation of two great Canadian rocknroll bands, the Riff Randalls and the King Khan and BBQ Show. The Mothballs were lucky enough to play two shows with them.

The first show was on Friday at thee Parkside. I was pleased to find that my most despised soundman Geno was replaced by… umm, I forget her name, but she was really nice. Unfortunately, sound at that show was pretty disastrous. For most of the bands, the problem was simply inaudible vocals (Brett Flake repetitively commented on this in an attempt to make amusing banter). For King Khan and BBQ, though, there was horrendous feedback mysteriously caused by microphones that didn’t even work. I’m hesitant to blame all this on the new soundperson, mostly because that would imply that Geno was good at what he did.

The next night at Gilman, the Jack London Squares decided the join in on the fun and play in the Stoar. The only problem: we had to borrow gear, but all the Mothballs’ stuff was being over-used by the Canadian acts who couldn’t smuggle their own equipment across the border. Knowing that every member of Harold Ray is super nice, but also a little “queer for gear,” I hesitantly asked David if I could borrow his guitar. Equally hesitant, he agreed. I took it into the Stoar to set-up so we could play between the legitimate sets of KKBBQ and HRLIC, only to have David walk through every five minutes to check up on his axe. At first it was annoying, but then I realized that he must be a lot nicer than people who lend out equipment they don’t give a fuck about.

To read “more” about these shows, check out Carlos’ LJ!
