The scoop on the new fall TV shows according to me and my internet skillz - Round 1

Oct 14, 2009 16:15

Quick mention, a show has already been canceled this season. I didn't watch it but The Beautiful Life, the show about "behind the scenes" of modeling, only got out 2 episodes before the plug was pulled.

Also, the fall season of So You Think You Can Dance is bringing in low ratings. It may go back to being just a summer show. Thank Dog!

The Cleveland Show, the Family Guy spin off, a show I did not watch but Connor and Steve did once since it was on after The Simpsons. I don't know if they liked it but I was in another room and couldn't even stand listening to it.

Here are some of the shows I have watched to start with...

Accidentally On Purpose
ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE, based on the bestselling memoir by Mary F. Pols, is a comedy about a single woman, Billie, who finds herself "accidentally" pregnant after a one-night stand with a much younger guy, and decides to keep the baby...and the guy. A newspaper film critic, Billie is barely surviving a humiliating breakup with her charming boss, James, who's still trying to resume their relationship. Pregnant, after a brief fling with her "boy toy" Zack, Billie and Zack make an arrangement to live together platonically. Billie's party girl best friend Olivia, and Abby, her conventional, younger married sister, eagerly look forward to the new addition and offer their own brands of advice and encouragement. But when Zack and his freeloading friends, including Davis, start to turn her place into a frat house, Billie isn't sure if she's living with a boyfriend, a roommate, or if she just has another child to raise.

***I like Jenna Elfman but I was a little wary of the show. It has the great lead in of How I Met Your Mother so we're on the channel anyway. I have watched 2 episodes and so far so good. I've had some very big laughs out of it and I enjoy the characters. Zacks friend Davis is funny in his slackerness and I LOVE Ashley Jensen, who plays Olivia. She was previously on Ugly Betty and she was one of my favorite parts of that show as well. The show is a little over the top but in the way that I'm a little over the top so it's not completely unbelievable. And they have managed to keep up the level of funny in every episode which is promising. If they can continue what they're doing it could be a keeper. Unfortunately I've heard their ratings have been low.

Melrose Place
In an elegant Spanish-style apartment complex in the trendy Melrose neighborhood of Los Angeles, the lives and relationships of a diverse group of 20-somethings intertwine to form a close-knit surrogate family. Sydney Andrews (Laura Leighton, the original "Melrose Place") is the landlady, still beautiful at 40, and a central figure in the lives of all her tenants, especially handsome and rebellious David Breck (Shaun Sipos, "Shark"). Sydney started an affair with David despite her turbulent history with his estranged father, Dr. Michael Mancini (Thomas Calabro, the original "Melrose Place"). Both father and son learned through experience that Sydney was not above using blackmail to control people.
Another tenant, high-powered publicist Ella Simms (Katie Cassidy, "Supernatural"), once considered Sydney her mentor, but their friendship was destroyed by betrayal, and Sydney threatened to evict Ella and ruin her career. Sydney also played a pivotal role in the career of Auggie Kirkpatrick (Colin Egglesfield, "All My Children"). After they met at an AA meeting, she became a supportive friend to Auggie and encouraged his dream to become a chef. He’s now a successful sous chef at the trendy restaurant Coal, but his relationship with Sydney has gone sour since she began drinking again.
The other tenants include Lauren Yung (Stephanie Jacobsen, "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles"), a medical student in desperate need of money to pay her student loans, and Jonah Miller (Michael Rady, "Swingtown"), an aspiring filmmaker who has just proposed to his live-in girlfriend Riley Richmond (Jessica Lucas, "Cloverfield"), a first-grade teacher. The newest tenant, wide-eyed 21-year-old Violet Foster (Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, "7th Heaven"), has just arrived in LA and is horrified to find a bloody body floating in the courtyard pool. David is the leading suspect but, as the police are soon to discover, almost everyone living at Melrose Place had a reason to want the deceased out of the way.
An updated version of the popular 1990s series, MELROSE PLACE is from CBS Television Studios with executive producers Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer ("Smallville"). Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth") is the director and executive producer of the pilot.

***First off, this description from the website is entirely too long. That's ridiculous. I watched the first episode and tried to decide if I liked it. I decided I didn't. I liked that they were able to bring back a lot of the original cast but I almost wonder if that's part of it's downfall. The remake of 90210 does not rely heavily on the original cast and it makes it almost a completely new show, not a remake. It's not as much a continuation as Melrose Place is doing. Which could be part of the problem. I stopped watching it because it got so out of control and when this started it was already too much for me to take in 1 episode. I also found that I could not stand the majority of the characters. There was maybe 1 or 2 that I found myself somewhat interested in following their stories but the rest I could care less. Also, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz is a horrible actress. And I do mean HORRIBLE. I thought about giving this show a second viewing just to try again but I have so many other shows I already watch that this one I had to give up on from the get go. There was enough that I didn't like in the 1 episode to not bother. It was painful to watch. Heard this show also has low ratings.

Modern Family
Jay recently married Gloria. Now Jay is trying hard to keep up with his much younger and hotter Colombian wife, along with her passionate pre-teen son, Manny. Claire is having a hard time raising her own family. Her husband Phil is great, except that he thinks he's "down" with their three kids, much to all their embarrassment. And, Mitchell and his enthusiastic partner Cameron have just made a major life change by adopting a Vietnamese baby named Lily.

***The first episode I loved! It was hilarious! After a couple episodes now...eh, it's actually starting to wear on me. I think the characters are a little too much for me. The dad who tries to be cool is down right annoying and I've never been a fan of Ed O'Niell, who plays Jay, so he bugs me in general. As does Sofia Vergara, who plays his wife and is an over the top Colombian stereotype. The rest of the characters are kind of meh except for the gay couple who is hilarious. I don't know if I will keep watching this for the long haul.

CougarTown
Cougar Town follows the life of recent divorcée Jules Cobb (Courteney Cox). Jules runs a successful business, has the best friends, and a great son. But when it comes to relationships, she has a lot to learn. However, the more Jules puts herself back out there, the more she discovers that the only way to find yourself, is to let yourself go. After all, you only get one chance to experience your 20s. Even if it’s when you’re 40 something.

***I actually didn't want to watch this show. I was gonna try it but the first night felt like a chore. I had really low expectations and it was funny! In fact, it has consistently stayed funny in the episodes following the first one. I actually like it. I enjoy the relationships Jules has with everyone around her. Her son, her best friend who lives next door, the divorced man across the street who's always having 20 something women leaving his house. We'll see if it keeps up the funny and again it's a show that has some serious over the top moments but as long as they don't get out of control, it should keep my attention.

Community
From Dan Harmon ("The Sarah Silverman Program") and Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo ("Arrested Development") comes "Community," a smart comedy series about a band of misfits who attend Greendale Community College. At the center of the group is Jeff Winger (Joel McHale, "The Soup"), a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked. With some help from his fellow classmates, Winger forms a study group who eventually learn more about themselves than their course work.
Also among the series stars who comprise the group are comedy legend Chevy Chase ("Chuck") as Pierce, a man whose life experience has brought him infinite wisdom; Gillian Jacobs ("The Book of Daniel") as Britta, the 28-year old drop out with something to prove; Yvette Nicole Brown ("Rules of Engagement") as Shirley, a sassy middle-aged divorcée; Danny Pudi ("Greek") as Abed, a pop culture junkie; Alison Brie ("Mad Men") as Annie, a high-strung perfectionist; Donald Glover ("30 Rock") as Troy, a former high school football star trying to find his way and Ken Jeong ("The Hangover") as Spanish professor, Señor Chang.

***I can't lie, this show is not good. I knew just from seeing the previews that it wouldn't be any good but I love Joel McHale, we all do, so we watch. The first episode was hard to watch because it was so bad. We watched the second episode and it was much better. If Ken Joeng is in all the episodes he could save the show. He is hilarious. It's one of those shows that is so weird and throws together every misfit stereotype that it comes out awkward and uncomfortable. That's how I feel watching it.
