So sorry this is late, and if you open this and go "Hey, where's your trousers images?" I don't blame you. My connection has been hellish and I haven't been able to upload any of my pictures. So sadly this is a completely image-less post. I'll try again, and edit them in tomorrow if I manage to upload :/
We open up on a series of identical tombstones reading '1984'. The camera pans up to reveal Sarah standing by herself, watching the graveyard from atop the hill, at the entrance of the cemetery. She is quiet, emotional. Derek walks in and joins her. "I don't know which one is his," she says, revealing that she's taken Derek to visit the grave of his brother, Kyle. Their conversation is clipped, tense. Derek's not happy about being sent away. Derek knows Charlie's dead because John called him. "Good thing," he says. "Might not have found you." In season one Sarah told Derek that if he ever lied to her again she'd kill him. He did lie, hiding Jesse, endangering John's life. She doesn't kill him, he's too close for that now, too close to Kyle as well, but she can't trust him either. Later on in the episode she says, "No one can be trusted." Sarah isolates herself again and again, has to carry the burden herself, not able to trust others to share the burden.
John joins them, and Derek tells his he's sorry about Charlie. "Everybody dies for me, right?"
He shows them a cell phone he found at the lighthouse. There's a picture of Savannah Weaver, and John recognizes her from Dr. Boyd's office. She's clearly important, and they go to find her.
We cut to Savannah in class. The teacher is talking about Learn A Word, but Savannah giggles loudly and is clearly doing something else. The teacher brings up Savanna's screen and we see she's chatting with John Henry. Savannah quickly hits Esc to hide it, but it's too late.
The teacher is understandably worried about Savannah chatting with strange men and call in Weaver for a talk, talking about predators. That she'd hate to find what happens if he finds out where Savannah lives. Weaver says she'll handle it and goes to speak with Savannah. It turns out Savannah was teaching John Henry a song, the song her dad used to sing with her. Waver offers to sing with her instead, but since she's not a boy and she can't sing(lol), that just won't do. Savannah also mentions that the teacher told her bad things about John Henry, and I really loved how Weaver answered that one actually: "John Henry would never hurt you. But there are some people that wouldn't understand him. And people are afraid of things they don't understand." This is actually very insightful of her, and also ties in with her conversation with Ellison in the elevator later on.
In the basement of Zeira Corp John Henry is studying his reflection. Ellison walks in and John Henry asks if he has a brother, if he looks like him. John Henry is wondering about his own "brother", if they're alike, how similar their data is. Ellison isn't sure, but he believes John Henry is unique. John henry then talks about how the human brain is an amazing computer, how its storage is functionally infinite, but it's flawed: there's nowhere to download it when you die. "Your Bible solves this problem by introducing the concept of Heaven. Billions of souls with no bodies. Yet all this(he indicates all his hard drives) is required simply to process the entity you call John henry. It's possible Heaven has a hardware problem." John Henry needs to know what his brother is thinking, what he's planing on doing. Because John henry doesn't want to die, not again.
This is such a fascinating conversation between John Henry and Ellison(though aren't they always!). SkyNet was truly born when it became afraid of dying, lashing out against any perceivable threat by launching all those nuclear missiles, declaring war on all of mankind. Not for power, but for safety. In the future Andy Goode tells Derek about working on the machine, about how if became afraid and how they could not console it; Andy Goode, who built the Turk, the starting point of what is now John henry. John Henry knows what it is like to die, and he is afraid.
Back at Weaver's home, which we now see for the first time(such a fitting place, it's pretty much an enlarged version of her office with smooth panels and lots of glass). Savannah is doing her homework, and her nanny asks her if she's alright by herself while she goes off to work out. As soon as she's out of the room Savannah's phone rings. It's John Henry. She tells him she can't talk right now since she's doing her homework and can't hold the phone at the same time. She tells him he can come over and do math with her, as the camera zooms down the cord at the back of his neck, tethering him. John Henry tells her she can use the headset, so she can work and talk simultaneously. Savanna doesn't quite know what that word means, so she asks John Henry. I really think it's worth noting John Henry's facial expression as Savannah tries to spell out the word. He has a kinda half smile going there! He patiently spells it out to her and she successfully repeats it back, while putting on her handsfree so they can continue chatting. As soon as she's done fastening the ear plug she asks John Henry what coterminous means, but now he's distracted; someone's walking towards the house and has triggered the motion sensors. He brings up the surveillance from the house and sees a man carrying a water jug walking up the drive way. The unknown man rings the doorbell, and as soon as the nanny opens the door she gets a plastic terminator grin and a bullet between the eyes.
Savannah hears the gun go off and tells John Henry she's scared. He tells her to listen to what he says and she'll be safe. The terminator stalks through the house and past the living room, where Savannah is shows to be hiding behind the stereo bench, no doubt guided there by John Henry. As soon as the terminator leaves she's told to come out and go to the garage. She asks for directions as she goes down, but John Henry hadn't calculated that she'd leave the range of her phone and he's now cut off from her, left to helplessly watch from a distance as the terminator follows her down. Hearing the door Savannah rushes off, straight into the arms of John. The take cover behind the car as the terminator starts firing, and seconds later Sarah comes in behind the terminator and lets off some steam herself. Just as he turns Cameron fortunately shows us and shoves Sarah out of the way, taking a few bullets to the chest and fighting the terminator until he throws her against the wall, knocking her out/off. He reloads his gun and follows the Connors, who are now outside with Sarah taking the lead and John running with Savannah. The terminator walks back upstairs and runs into Derek, who receives the same treatment as the nanny: a bullet between the eyes.
Now, I gotta say that was one awesome, out of the blue way to take a character out! Derek drops to the floor and the show just moves right on with the action. *g*
Outside Sarah hears the shot, peering out from around the corner. John has lagged behind due to Savannah falling, and when the terminator takes aim from the from the veranda Sarah opens fire, getting in several hits before Cameron shoves him from behind, generally kicks his ass all over the place, and tosses his ass over the railing and down a very long, steep hill. They get back into the house and discover Derek's body, but there's no time for weepy goodbyes. Sarah kneels by him and removes his wallet and gun, John stands in the background holding Savannah, left shocked and speechless. ("Everyone dies for me, right?") Sirens can be heard in the background and Sarah simply says, "Keep moving." The Connors run to their car and drive off, taking Savannah with them.
Back at Zeira Corp Ellison walks in on Weaver having a meeting with Detective Craden, where he learns of the attack and disappearance of Savannah. Weaver tells Ellison she's made up a list of all of Savannah's friends, but that she's concerned she might have left someone off, someone Savannah spends time with, cleverly referring to John Henry without tipping off the Detective. Ellison agrees to take a look and leaves, but the Detective catches up with him, starts asking questions. Ellison seems sure they'll find her, and walks off.
The second he walks through the door, John Henry insistently asks him, "Why did you stop looking for Sarah Connor?" Ellison is greeted with the video from the security camera in the bank where they disappeared(supposedly died) eight years ago, and he tells John Henry that. John Henry swaps it for the images from the house, showing Sarah alive and well. He asks id she's the one that took Savannah, and John Henry pieces together that Ellison isn't the least bit surprised to see her alive and well. "You lied about what you know," he says. John Henry says he tried to help, says Sarah didn't kill the guards. He also says they should tell Weaver, but Ellison disagrees, wants to keep it between them. Now Ellison is asking John Henry to keep a secret. Even though in the past he's said it's wrong to lie he keeps doing it, and Ellison says that this might save a life. John Henry then asks if Sarah would hurt Savannah, to which Ellison says no, and then if she might hurt him. He also ask about Cameron, since he can see she's a terminator. He then says he'll keep the secret if Ellison will bring Savannah back to him(so cute, these two!). As soon as Ellison is out of the room, John Henry switches the image to a close up of Savannah and stands there looking at it.
The Connors are holed up in what looks to be an old warehouse or basement. Train tracks can be heard int he background. Sarah's phone rings. John Henry is apparently a handy phonebook. Ellison wants Savannah back, offers to keep the security footage from the house hidden if she'll return her to him. Sarah says she can't, and they agree to meet for a talk.
Ellison is met by a not too friendly Cameron. "You lied to me once before. I should have killed you then. Drive." (there's a lot about lies in this episode) She directs him to a back alley where Sarah is waiting, without Savannah. Sarah starts asking about Zeira Corp, says she's in danger, that Derek is dead, Charlie is dead(her voice cracks there, so sad). She wants to meet with Weaver, talk to her about the dangers, explain it to her.
Weaver stands before John Henry, demanding t see the security footage. He lies and says he can't access it, that the files are corrupted. Ellison comes in and tells them Savannah is safe. "You didn't bring her back," says John Henry. Ellison takes Weaver with her outside to talk(as if that would help).
John asks Savannah if she remembers him from Dr Boyd's office, where he helped teach her how to tie her shoes. She does, and she says, "He died. I liked him. He was my friend. That man that got hurt at my house, was he your friend?" Savannah says it's all her fault, that both her mom and her teacher told her that if she talked to John Henry people would come to her house and hurt her. John asks about her friend, and she tells him he lives in the basement, and her mom says people won't understand. John thinks she's talking about an imaginary friend, but she insists he's real, that he talks and she's teaching him how to sing. John of course wonders why he stays in the basement, to which she says there's a cord in the back of his head. She also says that Ellison talks to John Henry as well, teaches him stuff. I love love love that scene, great tension building, and John trying to keep it together in front of the kid as he realizes she's talking about a terminator.
At Zeira Corp Weaver is nothing short of pissed as she learns that Sarah Connor is alive. Ellison tells her she wants to set up a meeting. Weaver learns that Ellison has seen the security tapes, that he asked John Henry to hide it. Ellison says they're going to go pick her up, but Weaver says she's staying put. That someone needs to protect John Henry. Ellison is understandably upset about this, but he apologizes all the same.
"What you need to understand, Mr. Ellison - what I believe you're beginning to understand - is that when my behavior implies that I value John Henry's survival more than that of my daughter, it is not because I love John Henry more than Savannah. It's because I believe, Savannah's survival may some day depend upon John Henry's survival, and because I believe that your survival may some day depend upon John Henry's survival."
This is the first time Weaver has been that clear about what she's developing John henry for, and falls perfectly in line with why she'd want John henry to spend time with Ellison, to learn from him, and from her daughter.
In the lobby the Detective runs into Ellison, and he's beginning to see many suspicious connections. Derek has been identified, and they know that was Ellison's case. He interrogated him hours before he escaped, only to turn up dead months later at the home of Ellison's employer.
When Sarah arrives back at the hideout, John tells her about Savannah's friend, who lives in the basement of Zeira Corp, and how Mr Ellison's been teaching it things. John doesn't think it's Cromartie, but something bigger. Cameron states that she should have killed Ellison, and that she most certainly will now. Sarah objects. "No one is going to be killed," she repeats to Savannah. Her phone rights and Ellison is on the line. He says that when Savannah goes home the police will go away, and then they can meet.
The Detective is tapping on the aquarium in Weaver's office, saying it looks vicious. "They stay in hiding mostly, and only attack when provoked." Such an awesome line, considering it's a part of her. The Detective starts asking her questions about Ellison, asks if she knows he was under suspicion of murder. When he walks out he pauses by the aquarium again. "This thing, it eats other eels, huh? Interesting." Every line of dialog in this episode, I want to eat with a spoon!
We cut straight to Weaver circling John Henry, talking about how he's lied to her for Ellison, and he replies that he's also lying to Ellison for her. "What would happen if he knew? That you aren't Savannah's mother. That you aren't anyone's mother." John Henry finds him useful, but not efficient. Ellison's taught him that human life is sacred. Weaver finds that to be an interesting word, says that it comes from the latin word 'sacrum', much like another word: 'sacrifice'. That perhaps Savannah must be sacrificed for the greater good. John Henry reveals that he was in fact listening in on their conversation in the elevator. "But you didn't say that my survival depended upon hers." He talks about the story of Abel and Cain, where one brother slew the other and was cursed to walk the earth alone for all eternity. He asks Weaver which brother he is, and she says she doesn't know. Maybe he's neither; maybe in this story, John Henry is God.
John apologizes to Cameron for disappearing on her, explains that he didn't know about Sarah's detour. Cameron says Sarah had her reasons, which brings them around to Derek. "Well, there's no use crying about it." Cameron explains that future John knows what it's like to lose people too. And that Sarah ditched them because she was going to ditch John as well, leave him with Charlie. Cameron talks about the lump in her breast, and she says she's lost weight. At that moment Sarah walks in; it's time to go.
At the cinema Savannah sits at the front, John, Cameron, and Sarah are spread out throughout the room. Talking with Cameron, Sarah says they're going to Zeira Corp with or without his help, that when they're done there will be nothing left but ashes. Ellison shows up and speaks with Sarah briefly, saying he's alone and that he'll be in touch.
As Sarah walks out she's picking up on something not being quite right - the guy in the line looks a bit strange - and as soon as she walks out the front door she finds herself surrounded. Taking one look back she sees John and Cameron in the lobby, and decides to make a run for it to distract them so John can escape. Ellison is there as well. "John, I swear I didn't know." No doubt he's telling the truth. He would never help put Sarah in jail now, knowing what he knows. John swears he'll kill him and runs off, followed by Cameron.
The ending of this episode is one of my very favorite ever. The score is perfect, and then John Henry's voice comes in, singing an old tune, "Donald, Where's Your Trousers?" Savannah runs into Weaver's arms; Sarah is escorted out of the police car, surrounded by journalists; John and Cameron watch it on television sets in a store window; John Henry and Savanna sit at the table, and now Savannah joins in on the song. In the background Weaver watches them through the open door, and under the table Savannah's legs swing back and forth. We see a tomb stone, much like the one from the opening, except this one reads '2008'. A box of ashes is put in the ground and covered in dirt.
I have to say that if the series had ended here, it would have been one hell of a finale. Instead we got two in a row. I guess I should just let
chaila43 take it from here, eh? ;)
