PERSONALITY:

"You know what the food chain is, right? I'm sure you learned about it in school. Witches prey on weak humans and we prey on the witches. That's the way how the world works, isn't?"

Before the story began, Kyouko belonged to a normal family. Her family consisted of her father, mother, sister and herself. Her father worked for a church and preached what the church told him to preach to other people. However, as time passed, Kyouko's father began to preach things that differed from the church's teachings and no one bothered to listen to him. Since he deviated from the regular doctrine, the church he worked for excommunicated him. Her family declined into poverty and none of them had anything to eat for a long time. They were forced to eat the scraps that other people left behind. Desperate to help, Kyouko made a wish to Kyuubey to become a Puella Magi and in return, everyone would listen to her father and what he had to say. Of course, her wish came true and everyone did. Followers would flood into the church and listen to everything her father had to say. Life eventually got better for her family and for herself, she felt like she was working alongside her father to help people and save the world.

During this time, Kyouko is a normal and happy teenage girl. She even befriends a fellow (but slightly older) Puella Magi named Mami and the two of them quickly become friends. Mami bakes cakes as well as makes tea for Kyouko and the two of them fight witches side by side. However, time passes and her father notices that everything is not as it seems. He finds out that Kyouko has used magic to get people to listen to him and he calls his daughter a witch. After that, driven mad by the truth he murders her entire family and hangs himself soon after. When Kyouko witnesses this-- her ideals change, her heart changes. She fights with Mami and leaves, believing no longer in love and courage. Thinking that no one should fight for others, no one should do anything for another person, and that you should only use what you are given for yourself. Helping others is a fast way to pain, or so she began to believe.

"The point of magic is making your wishes come true! Nothing good happens if you use it for someone else!"

Kyouko lived most of her life very alone, without knowing what it was like to have another person as a companion, much less a friend. After leaving Mami behind she spent all of her days alone, working only to serve herself. This shows through her inability to articulate her feelings properly towards other people. Instead of telling them how she really feels, she ends up getting frustrated and sounding selfish or cruel instead. Or she'll end up starting fights, instead of talking things out. She appears as very selfish, only wanting her powers for herself but this is because she believes that if you help someone else out, you're only bound to hurt yourself. If you sacrifice something for someone else, you won't recieve the same back. She doesn't know how to act with other people, and that's why Sayaka quickly clashed ideals with her when they first met.

If there's one thing Kyouko hates more than anything else it's wasting food. Her family declined into poverty and barely had enough to eat, they had to hold onto every little bit they could find. This is why she's always seen with food in her hands, arms, or mouth. She's eating the food that her family didn't get the chance to eat. She also hates seeing other people wasting food, if she notices someone wasting any kind of food, and any amount of it, she'll most likely fall into a fit of anger. An example of this would be when she offered an apple to Sayaka, only to have Sayaka drop it to the ground. The minute the apple dropped to the floor, Kyouko grabbed Sayaka by the collar and attempted to choke her. Noticing however what she was doing soon after, she let go.

Kyouko may appear cold at first, but she has the potential to warm up to someone. Sayaka is an example of this. Though Kyouko was initially very cold and cruel to her at first, as she noticed that she could relate to the girl she began to open up more and more and look out for her. Rather than start fights with her, of course. Her cold personality and selfish tendencies however relate back to the fact that she made a selfless wish for her father. Though because of the wish's repercussions, her whole family suffered. She believes that the one thing she learned from being a Puella Magi is that using magic to help others is a mistake, and that magic should only be used to make one's own wishes come true. This of course changes after time, especially during the time that Sayaka becomes a witch, because Kyouko becomes selfless once more. Using her magic, and Madoka's voice, to try and save her.

"It'd be like a story where love and courage wins, you know? When I think about it, I became a Puella Magi because I loved those stories."

Kyouko was also once the type who believed in stories where love and courage could overcome anything, but after her wish caused her entire family to be slaughtered, she stopped believing in silly stories like that. That was, until she met Sayaka, the person who reminded her of why she made her wish in the first place. So love and courage could prevail in the end, that it could overcome anything.

ABILITIES:

It all starts with a contract, a wish, made with a magical creature called Kyuubey. When a young girl makes a wish to him, they have their soul taken out of their body and placed into a small container called a soul gem. In return for this, their wish is completely granted-- regardless of what consequences may entail from the wish. The only thing Kyuubey asks from the (now) magical girl is that they fight off witches and collect the grief seeds the witches leave behind. However all good things come with a price and this claims to be true for the girls who become magical girls. For when they have their souls taken out of their body and put into soul gems, their body can no longer remain animated unless it is in close proximity to the soul gem. If the soul gem is too far away, the body becomes a lifeless husk. Not only that, but there also needs to be an equal amount of hope and despair inside of the soul gem. If there is ever too much despair, then the soul gem becomes tainted and the magical girl turns into a witch. That is the drawback to becoming a magical girl-- that in the end, all magical girls eventually become witches. Some sooner than others.

Something notable to mention is that before Kyouko lost her family, her main ability as a Puella Magi was an illusory attack called "Rosso Fantasma" (Red Illusion/Phantom) named by Mami-san the great. After her father finds out the secret behind her deeds as a Puella Magi and the wish she made, he kills her entire family and then himself. This causes Kyouko to lose her ideals and become selfish and cold. Once she loses her ideals, she also loses the power of "Rosso Fantasma" however it is implied that the final attack she uses to destroy herself and Sayaka's witch form is the same attack that she lost so long ago. Showing that after meeting Sayaka, she remembered the reasons why she became a Puella Magi and thus was able to use her old powers again.

Kyouko's main ability is to transform into a Puella Magi, or "magical girl". She is not seen to use much of her magic as a Puella Magi, but the notable times where she has used her magic is during battles with her spear. She can transform it and make it as long as she wants, having it break down and resemble a scorpion's tail. She also has the ability to create barriers with her magic. An instance where she created barriers happened during her fight with Sayaka where she created a barrier to keep Madoka and Kyuubey out of the battle between Sayaka and her. It is also shown in the final battle between Sayaka (in her witch form) and Kyouko that she has the potential to make her spear break down (resembling a tail) and turn gigantic (what could be Rosso Fantasma). However an overuse of magic in any form puts her soul gem at risk of being tainted with despair -- meaning it would become a grief seed.
