i3endy told me to find
this and watch it because I sometimes bitch about Dan Savage's views on bisexuality. It is about 2 1/2 minutes and probably worth your time - although beware, it could start you on a long journey of videos of Dan Savage talking about various things. The man is eloquent.
That does make me feel a little better about things, I suppose. The thing that bothers me is gays and lesbians have been fighting this notion that their sexuality is illegitimate for a long time - it is a central part of the gay rights struggle. I mean, this is particularly a concern for lesbians since women's sexuality is often thought of as inconsequential, so maybe Dan Savage and gay men in general aren't as intimately familiar with the frustration that accompanies that idea. Anyway, what I mean to say is that it's irritating to watch someone who's part of a group of persecuted people who had to overcome this idea of illegitimate sexuality proceed to spout the same ideas about another group of people. And yes I'm sure, more people do "grow out" of bisexuality than hetero- or homosexuality. But that doesn't mean that there still aren't "legitimate"* bisexuals out there who, as a class of people, are hurt by these generalizations. And oftentimes Dan Savage spouts these generalizations without regard for those to whom they don't apply, and that is why I have a bone to pick with him.
*Okay, I'm getting a little liberal with the sarcasm quotation marks. This has to do with the fact that I think sexuality is often fluid and that is totally okay, and it's harmful to call a changing sexuality "illegitimate" or to say that going one way or the other is "progress". It's just change, flat and simple, and there's nothing wrong with change.
This brings me to something I've been meaning to post about for awhile! I ordered
this movie forever ago and it finally arrived a couple weeks ago, and I would like to hold a private screening and invite all of you wonderful people. For those who are uninterested in watching the trailer, it is a documentary called "Bi the Way" on bisexuality in America that follows five people across the country who identify as bi and it is really good and you should see it. If you're interested in watching it with me and a select group of lovely individuals, leave a comment and tell me when is good for you! Or facebook me, because I'm pretty sure you all know me on facebook?
Dude Sebastian keeps hitting the caps lock key while I am typing and it is making things interesting. He says hi, f-list. In other news I really like it when infant pants have like, fake pockets and a fake fly and all that. his hands are not nimble enough to work a zipper
