2012. A new year. Hopefully, this one will be better than the last.

“What are you doing out here?” He heard someone behind him, and Arthur walked up to the unnaturally contemplative nation. “Shouldn’t you be at the meeting?”

“Shouldn’t you?” Alfred replied as Arthur sat on the rail beside him. “I was just thinking ‘bout the year, so much has happened.”

“Yes, indeed.” They were silent for a moment.

“Do you think it was worth it?” Alfred said suddenly. Arthur looked over at him.

“What are you talking about?”

“Everything. The war, Osama, you know, stuff like that. I was just wondering if it was really worth going over there in the first place. I mean, Afghanistan said he didn’t have anything to do with the terrorists, should we have really gone over there and caused havoc in their country like that?”

“That was actually rather deep, Alfred. I’m shocked.” Arthur said jokingly, making Alfred scowl, and Arthur turned serious. “But it’s rather late for talk like that, isn’t it? The war was declared finished.”

“Yeah, I guess. It’s just… Do you think he’ll ever like me again? He seemed really angry the last time we talked.” Alfred bit his lip.

“Well, you and Japan are friends now, aren’t you? You two have forgiven each other for World War Two, just as you and Afghanistan and Iraq will be friends again. Trust me, I should know.”

“Yes, you would know, wouldn’t you?” Alfred chuckled, and Arthur punched his shoulder. “Ow!” He complained.

“Oh, buck up, you git.” Arthur grumbled, and the conversation dissolved into argument.

They might not be prepared for the future, no, not in the least, but they were going to meet it head-on.
