...and hi tl;dr intro. rosesandlimes September 16 2011, 02:21:53 UTC
There weren't views like this in District J. There were buildings that sat pressed up against each other, and together they crowded the sidewalks of narrow streets. There was dirt and grime, and a lot of noise. District J was nothing like this wide openness of the ocean or the trail along its coastline.

Fiel, Iriel's best friend, found it hard to relax in places like it, claiming that space between her shoulder blades itched when there was no wall to put her back to, or an easy corner to duck around at a moment's notice. If Iriel felt that same vulnerability, she didn't mention it, always choosing life experiences over fear. Besides, District J was landlocked. A view like this came once in a lifetime for citizens of Halis.

Iriel breathed deeply, and while looking around she noticed that she wasn't the only one on the trail. She studied the man a moment, noting he was older than her, relaxed as far as his body language indicated, and unarmed, though it was hard to be sure of that at a distance. Iriel gave him a brief nod of acknowledgment before turning back to the ocean.

Leoben gazed out at the ocean, though his attention may have been elsewhere. A bird in the distance, the sound of the wind, the rustling of the grass, very little was escaping his attention and he found it all fascinating.

That someone was approaching didn't escape his attention either. He looked up, catching the nod that was given, and which he was about to return before...

He's staring now, and he knows that he's staring. It's a bad habit of his but he can't stop because whoever this person, she looks exactly like Kara. He knows it's not Kara because if it was, she would have recognized him and reacted accordingly (which wouldn't have gone well, considering). He wants to say something, apologize, stop staring, but the words catch in his throat and he's stuck.

She didn't notice at first, but for some reason, maybe it was sixth sense, maybe it was instincts, she felt her hair stand on end.

Iriel looked over to the man again and found him staring. It wasn't something she was unused to, however there was something different this time. He didn't seem to be trying to place her face, to try and figure out if he'd seen her as a part of the resistance movement. He looked like he'd seen a ghost, and it unnerved her.

"Can I help you with something?" she asked sharply, turning slowly toward him before taking a few steps in his direction.

Leoben looked away, slightly embarrassed at being caught, though he had seen it coming. He focused on the ground, not really wanting to look up again as he knew he'd just start staring again. It's impolite, yes, but it's the better option, he thinks.

"Uh, no, actually. It's nothing," he said, finally managing to find his words again. "You just look like someone I know."

It might be hard to say who is more unnerved.

That isn't a comforting answer. Not at all. Iriel's hand creeps to her pocket, or at least, what used to be a pocket. At the bottom is a hole so she can easily reach for the handle of a knife she has strapped to her leg.

"Like who? Maybe we're related," she said. Her tone was a bit lighter, forced but not obviously so. She's had a great deal of practice in lying and seeming calm when she isn't. "I've got a few cousins who look like me."

Like who? The words echo in his mind as he searches for an answer. Who was Kara Thrace to him? Someone he loved, God's chosen one, just a woman he knew? It was hard, not having an answer.

"Exactly like you?" It seemed unlikely. Still, he has enough courage to look at her again, and not be as shocked.

That he can look her in the eye again and, as far as she can observe, answer her questions honestly, if not completely, helps. Still cautious but not quite so edgy, she tilts her head to the side.

"No, not that closely, and I'm not a twin," she replied.

Leoben pauses to think for a moment.

"Doppelgangers might be a better for this then. You are practically her likeness. I apologize for staring earlier. It caught me off guard."

He was surprised more and more these days, and still had trouble with the sensation when he was used to know all, or most at least. It bothered him.

"It's not really a comforting thought to know there's someone out there walking around with my face," she said, and it's after a moment that she realizes that whoever this person is, she hopes to god they're no where near Halis. If for some reason she ever were identified as a resistance fighter...well, it would be beyond horrible for the wrong person to get caught.

"Don't mind the staring though, at least now that I know why," she continued. "Where is this friend of yours these days?"

Leoben nods. He forgets sometimes that all humans are different. He's used to seeing multiple versions of himself. Though, it's been a long time since he's seen his brothers. Any of them, now that he thinks about it.

"I wouldn't know. I...haven't seen her in a long time," He shrugs. Granted, he doubts that Kara would want to see him, considering how things ended last time. He shifts over on the bench, offering a seat if she wants it.

"If you see her, I'd be curious to meet her," Iriel says carefully, and then takes the seat offered on the bench. Her gaze slides over to the horizon before them, and then back to the man.

"Name's Iriel," she offers after a moment, and then on a whim, holds out her hand, though she isn't offering a handshake. If he chooses to accept, she'll reach to grasp his forearm, an older version of the gesture.

Leoben nods. Undoubtedly he and Kara will meet again, at some point. They were always drawn to each other, in some way. Even though we worries about that meeting sometimes.

"Leoben," he replies, going to accept her hand. "Leoben Conoy."

Iriel nods, grasping his forearm once and holding it as she meets his eyes, before releasing it.

"So, where are you from, Leoben? Anywhere near here?" she asked, tucking her hand into her pocket once more. He wasn't really volunteering any details, and in these circumstances, it did nothing to put her off her guard.

If he's surprised by the gesture, it doesn't show.

"No, not really," Leoben began, and then paused. He often wondered about where his home was. He was a child of humanity, yes, but he didn't come from the colonies, technically. At the same time, it was a good a place as any. "I'm from the Twelve Colonies of Kobol."

"It doesn't sound familiar," she said at once. "But if that's the case, then I doubt you've heard of the Unified Districts of Halis either, have you?"

After a moment, Iriel exhaled sharply, mostly at herself, and pulled a package of cigarettes out of her pocket. She pulled one out, and stuck between her lips before offering one to Leoben. If the wind picked up the scent enough, he might notice the faint smell of cloves and roses.

"Can't say that I have," Leoben replied, after a moment's thought. However, he was getting used to the idea of multiple worlds.

"What sort of world is it like?" He takes one of the cigarettes, even though he doesn't usually smoke. It's more to be social than anything else.
