If your villain murders an extremely likable secondary character (and yes, that was a huge shock, as I'm sure you wanted it to be) midway through the book, don't have your hero tell me about the villain's capture and/or punishment. Show me ( Read more... )

I don't mind if the differences aren't too drastic. A book or story with an interesting villain and hero is wonderful. A book or story where the villain is three-dimensional and the hero is a Dudley Dowright cardboard cut-out isn't. :(

I suppose I have a similar feeling when reading an Insert-name-here female with indistinguishable characteristics and a male hero who the author lavishes keen attention upon.

Oh, that's right. We're supposed to be able to project ourselves upon said female... ~rolls eyes~

Oh, geez, yes! I've encountered more than one of those, too. I've never known which was worse, the barely physically there heroine or the Mary Sue heroine with her flashing violet eyes and her tumbling golden curls. ~sighs~
