Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Jun 02, 2011 11:51

knight0fswords and I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides yesterday. We didn't pay the extra money to see the 3D version, but since 3D tends to give me a headache, saving that money was a win-win. Yea!

Overall, I liked it. It's Johnny Depp playing Jack Sparrow, so really what's not to like?

specific spoilers ahoy )

You've hit on everything I liked and didn't like about the movie. I let out a muffled squeal of delight when I saw Judi Dench and was disappointed when we never saw her again.

I know! I would have liked her to have been seen again, but since they didn't return to London in the movie, I guess that wouldn't have worked out. :(

Yes! I knew that was Judi Dench! I agree with pretty much everything you said. Overall, it's entertainment, and I enjoy it. I didn't know there was an scene after the movie! Dang it.

The PotC movies always have a little scene after the credits, so we knew to stay and watch for it. You didn't miss a lot, really, but highlight to read if you want to know the (few) details: { It just showed Angelica sitting on the beach at the edge of the water, and she looks down to see Jack's Voodoo doll wash up. She picks it up, looks at it for a moment, then smiles widely. }

Oh boy! Thank you! Hmm, now she will have 'power' over him, yes? Which I can only assume, he would figure it out, and end up going back to the island to wrestle the doll away from her... dun dun dun!! LOL! I think there is talk of a 5th one too.

LOL - Yes, that will give her a lot of power over him, and Jack will have to get that doll back. ;)

I think there is talk of a 5th one too.

I don't doubt it. They've made billions off that franchise, and I can see why they wouldn't want it to stop.

I was so excited to see Judi Dench I think I squealed.

I agree about the plot being thin. I thought they kind of screwed up plot in the 3rd movie, but that was by jamming too much in. This film had... too little.

She was great! And I was so surprised to see her there! LOL

~nods~ Yes, exactly. At World's End had too much going on and On Stranger Tides too little. :(

You've summed up my own reactions in full, and yes, it was still a lot of fun (mermaids! Judi Dench!). And a lot of eye candy, although they killed off the pretty privateers! For shame. I did think Jack and Angelica could have had a great deal more chemistry, if their scenes hadn't been so brief, dark, and so obviously intended to convey exposition rather than passion. I do love Penelope Cruz, and admire her work, so I expected a lot more.

Thanks so much for the review :-)

It really was a lot of fun, and I was never bored, but I did wish for more substance and less flash. ;)

~nods~ That could have been a lot of the problem. There was so little interaction between the two that wasn't focused strictly on telling the audience about something that was about to happen next and that didn't allow their relationship to shine through.

Agreed! Although the relationship between Philip and Syrena was the best in this film, it did make me miss Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. And that is hard to forgive, as I don't like Orlando Bloom.

I still hoped that last scene after the credits would answer the question of whether Philip was really saved (and I was curious about how mermaids had merbabies, that maybe some of their victims were really for mates).

I wish that it had been the three of them together again, yes. But apparently Knightley and Bloom weren't interested. I do think that Angelica was supposed to fill Elizabeth's shoes and just didn't manage it. Not because of the actresses but because of the characters. I think Elizabeth's strong sense of right and wrong played better as a foil for Jack than Angelica's desire to help her father.

I know! Syrena told him that she could save him... knight0fswords turned to me and said, "Is he going to be a merman now?" I basically shrugged and went, "Bzuh?" because who knows?
