“Thanks Takaki!” Keito says happily when the older boy finishes helping him with his kanji.
Then, remembering that Takaki does know some Chinese, adds in “Wo ai ni!” for good measure.
Whatever reaction he expects from Takaki, it certainly isn’t for the older boy to drop his water bottle and stare at him, mouth wide open like a goldfish.
“…What?”
“Keito,” says Takaki carefully, “do you know what that means?”
Keito blinks dumbly at the older boy.
“It means ‘thank you’, doesn’t it?”
There is a shocked silence. Takaki looks at Keito, horrorstruck.
“Who told you that?”

The door to the music room is thrown open with a violent bang.
Startled, Inoo looks up from the keyboard of the piano.
“Keito-kun,” he says, mildly surprised. “What are you doing here?”
Keito ignores the statement, and instead points a slightly wobbling finger at Inoo in accusal.
“You tricked me!” he howls.
Inoo is dumbstruck.
“Eh?” is the most intelligent answer he can come up with.
“ ‘Wo ai ni’,” clarifies Keito, “it doesn’t mean ‘thank you’.”
“Oh,” says Inoo, realizing that he’s been exposed. He smiles nervously, as he fumbles for a good explanation.
Keito laughs to see Inoo floundering, before saying softly: “You know, if you wanted me to say I love you, you didn’t have to trick me into it.”
Inoo immediately stops flailing around like a windmill, and looks at Keito incredulously.
Keito crosses the room in a few wide strides, and envelops Inoo in a bony warm hug.
“I love you,” he whispers gently into Inoo’s ear, and the older boy tenses up a little.
He pulls back, to see Inoo frozen in shock.
“You…what?”
Keito smiles softly, and pats the older boy on the shoulder.
“I love you,” he repeats.
“And this time for real.”
