~

Yuto sees a little kid sitting against the wall of the Haunted House. The strong curiosity that all seven-year-olds possess gets the better him, and he wanders over.

“Boo.”

The kid lifts his head, and Yuto finds himself looking in a pair of red, puffy eyes.

Yuto can see misery in his eyes, and is suddenly at a loss as to what to say.

“Um,” he says to break the resulting awkward silence, “I’m Yuto!”

He stretches his hand out, and the kid stares at the hand, and then at him. Yuto nods, trying to encourage the kid to shake the proffered hand. The kid stares at him a bit more, then slowly, tentatively, puts his hand in Yuto’s.

“I’m Keito,” he says, quietly, and Yuto is struck by the velvet-smoothness of the boy’s voice, so unlike his own childishly high one. He grins.

“Well, Keito,” he says, plopping down next to the aforementioned kid, “what are you doing here?”

“I lost my mum,” he mumbles, “and I can’t find her.”

Yuto sees Keito’s lower lip begin to tremble, a sure sign that he’s going to break out into tears again. Thinking quickly, his eyes land on the massively large pink cotton candy in his hand, and he rips off a piece.

“Here,” he says, passing the candy to Keito, who sniffles and looks up at him with tremulous eyes.

He accepts the candy with a mumbled ‘Thanks’ and begins to nibble on it slowly.

“I’m sure she’ll come,” says Yuto. “Mums always seem to know where their kids are.”

Keito nods slowly. “I guess.”

“Like superheroes!” Yuto continues more enthusiastically, punching his free hand in the air. “I bet all mums are just retired superheroes.”

Keito stares at him with comically wide eyes for a moment, and begins to laugh at the hilarious comparison.

Yuto rips off another piece of cotton candy and laughs along.

~

Keito’s telling Yuto about his dogs when a pretty lady comes running towards them.

“Keito!” she cries, and she rushes over to smother said boy in a hug.

“Mum, geroff me!” whines Keito in a muffled voice. She does, and turns her gaze to Yuto.

“Thanks for keeping my son company,” she says, beaming, and Yuto suddenly realizes where Keito gets his adorable smile from.

Keito waves goodbye as his mother drags him off, and Yuto wanders off.

He pretends not to hear when Raiya complains about the impossibility of having to take such a long time to buy one cotton candy.

He passes the rest of the candy to Raiya. He doesn’t need it anymore.

After all, the adorably sweet smile of Keito is much better than a hundred cotton candies.
