01~

She met him right outside the coffee shop that they always frequented, hands jammed into the pockets of her parka and breath coming out in cold white puffs.

“We need to talk,” she murmured, words slightly muffled by the thick knit scarf wound around her neck.

Her tone was serious, and all he could do was follow her to the nearby park.

They sat down on a bench, and he waited in silence while she fidgeted nervously with the pink trim on the edge of her parka. Finally, she let out a long sigh as if letting out something she had been holding in for a long while, and turned her eyes to him.

He’d always remembered those large eyes being full of joy and wonder at everything in the world around them.

Now, there was only sadness he could see.

“Yuya-kun…” she began. “I’ve been thinking. A lot. About…about us.”

Not trusting himself to say anything, he could only nod.

“I’d always wonder if we were truly possible, you know? As a couple and such. We always have to be so secretive and stuff whenever we’re together, and have to lie to everybody to keep it under wraps. But I’ve been thinking…and I’m not sure how long more I can go on like this…”

Her voice wavered and she looked away, pressing her lips together nervously.

“…You understand, right?” she asked hesitantly after a long while.

“Mm.”

(Because honestly, what else could he even say in this situation?)

She looked down at her right hand, which was covered by his left one and sitting on the bench.

“This isn’t working out, Yuya-kun,” she continued, gesturing at his hand on top of hers. “Perhaps…we should just remain as friends.”

He was left sitting alone on the bench, with his left hand feeling colder than ever before and what felt like a large gaping hole beginning to form somewhere in his heart.

“Friends, huh…” he muttered to himself, heaving a long sigh.

It was the loneliest Christmas he could remember.

“I can’t believe you, honestly.”

He winced a little at her scolding tone.

“You’re studying on Christmas break? Kei, do you even understand what ‘holiday’ means?”

“It’s for my important exam, Umi,” Inoo sighed, smiling a little when she shot him a petulant pout in return.

“So important that you can forget about me, even?”

Sticking a post-it on the page he was on to mark it, he flipped his heavy textbook closed and turned to her.

“I wouldn’t forget about you, stupid. Not now, not ever. Not when you’re always in here,” he replied mildly, patting the area where his heart was for emphasis.

She beamed at him.

“Excellent! Now, let’s go get some hot chocolate.”

“Hey- Wait- What-”

Before his mind could register what was going on, he was already being dragged out the door with his shoes awkwardly forced onto his feet and a coat thrown at him. Stumbling, he tried to keep up with the pace at which she was dragging him through the cold streets.

“Ah well,” he sighed, giving in. “Studying can wait.”

“That’s the spirit!”

03~

He woke up on Christmas morning to find a small paper package sitting on his table. Her shoes were gone from the apartment entrance, and he guessed that she must have left after he had fallen asleep.

Padding across to the table in his room slippers, he picked up the package, noticing his name written on the package in her handwriting.

Gently, he opened it and upended it into his hand. A small note fell out, as well as a pair of keys. The spare keys, in fact, to his apartment.

Her set of spare keys.

Smiling a bittersweet smile, he let the tears fall.

To Kota:

Goodbye.

Hikaru knew that doing Christmas shopping on Christmas day itself was rather late, but he had only just realized he’d forgotten Inoo’s present the night before, only when he was wrapping everything up. By then, all the shops were closed, so he had no choice but to go the next day.

Idly, he walked up and down the shelves of piano scores in the music shop, hoping that something might catch his eye.

A sudden yelp was followed by what sounded like books hitting the floor.

Running out to the front of the shop, he saw that the salesgirl had tripped while carrying a large stack of scores, and they were now scattered all over the floor. Wordlessly, he squatted down and began to help the salesgirl pick up the books.

“Thank you,” she told him a little breathlessly when they had, between them, managed to get the books back into a sort-of-orderly pile.

“No problem,” he replied, adjusting the brim of his hat and standing up before sticking out his hand to help her up.

She accepted the hand and got to her feet before flashing him a brilliant smile, and Hikaru felt that for a moment - just for a moment - he might have felt his heart skip a beat at that.

A small smile spread across his face.

05~

“You’re joking.”

She giggled as she watched him unwrap his Christmas present, and his face changed from delight to resignation.

“Sorry,” she said while trying to catch her breath. “It’s just…your reactions are too funny!”

“Which part of getting me milk powder is funny, Akari? Honestly! And why does it have to say ‘proven to help with growth’ in obnoxious red letters on the front anyway?”

She doubled up again, laughing some more as he scowled.

“Ah, sorry, sorry,” she told him when she had finally gotten her laughter under control, not sounding very apologetic at all.

He heaved a long sigh.

“You’re turning into your brother,” he groaned. “Please don’t prank me all the time.”

“Sorry, Ari-chan,” she grinned. “It’s in my nature, I guess. Here’s your real present.”

She passed him a white envelope, and he opened it to find a piece of paper with words written in bright marker ink.

No-shoes Voucher

This voucher entitles one Arioka Daiki to get one Kamei Akari to go without high-heeled shoes for one week.

“…Why would I want you not to wear high heels?” he asked, bemused. “It’s not like you try to bore holes in my feet with them anyway…”

He trailed off when he noticed her cat-that-ate-the-canary grin.

“Well,” she began, grinning widely. “You see, if I remove my heels then I’ll be your height, which means you no longer have to tiptoe to kiss me-”

She watched as his face slipped from confused to another scowl in the span of two seconds, then scrambled up to run away from the living room with a giggle, him chasing behind and waving the empty envelope.

“You just wait, you…!”

“Catch me if you can~!”

As if unaffected by the merry chase, the snow continued to slowly fall outside the window.
