01: I’m captivated by you baby, like a fireworks show;
Hikaru slid the book of bass scores and five guitar picks across the counter of the music store.
“That will be 3500 yen,” the boy working at the cashier told him in a soft voice, and Hikaru nodded, pulling out his wallet to count out wrinkled bills.
Without looking up he passed the notes over, and noticed a pale, pale hand with long graceful fingers accept the money.
What- aren’t those girls’ fingers?
Bemused, Hikaru looked up and met the sparkling eyes of the cashier. He was a skinny, white teenager about his age, but with beautiful black hair curled gently around his face
“Here’s your change,” the cashier beamed at him, passing a couple of coins over the counter.
Just at that moment, Hikaru thought he felt his heart skip an erratic beat.
“Th-thanks.”
Long after he exited the music shop, the cashier boy’s gentle smile stayed on his mind.
He’s just like a sparkly prince, Hikaru mused to himself.
02: You gave me roses and I left them there to die;
“Inoo! Wait up-”
The skinny boy stopped, and turned around slowly.
“What?” he asked callously, roughly, and Hikaru winced.
“Just give me one chance, Inoo! I swear-”
Inoo shook his head, and Hikaru could see tears beginning to form in his beautiful eyes.
“I loved you, do you know that?” Inoo murmured softly. “I loved you once. And in the end you chose Yabu over me.”
“That was then, Inoo.”
Biting his lip, Inoo clenched his fists slowly.
“I agree,” he whispered. “But now, you’re only back because Yabu decided he liked Takaki more, isn’t it? You don’t even need to deny it. Is that all I am to you, simply a rebound?”
“Hey- no- Inoo, listen-”
Shaking his head again, Inoo turned back around and began walking again, further and further from Hikaru.
You don’t understand, Hikaru.
Then is then, and now is now. I loved you back then, that much is true.
But I don’t love you now. Not anymore.
03: I don’t want to grow up, it could still be simple;
Sometimes you think back on those childhood days.
“Mama,” you’d say often. “What does it mean when I see someone and my heart starts beating faster?”
Your mother would smile.
“What about when you feel sad that they don’t play with you all the time?” you continue asking, and she would sigh, ruffling your hair.
“You’ll understand when you grow up, Kei,” she would always say.
“Then I want to grow up now!” you’d demand, stamping your foot in childish innocence.
But a full ten years later, you’re all grown up, and you still don’t know the full answer to those innocent questions.
All you know is that when you see your dorky friend your pulse still races and you stutter like an idiot. Sometimes your face flushes pale pink when he grabs your hand or randomly hugs you, and when you see him with his pretty girlfriend you can’t help but feel a bitter taste at the back of your throat.
All you know is that it just might be love.
And it hurts.
Sometimes, you regret ever wanting to grow up.
04: I’m wonderstruck, blushing all the way home;
Their first meeting is at the birthday party of a mutual friend.
Hikaru bumps into that skinny boy who had just finished playing a couple of songs on the piano.
“You were great,” he says, passing a glass of fruit punch to the pianist.
“Thanks!” the pianist beams back. “My name’s Inoo Kei, I’m the best friend of the birthday boy.”
He winks, and Hikaru finds his attention drawn to the sparkling pair of black eyes.
“I’m Hikaru,” he murmurs, drowning in the depths of those eyes.
In that instant Hikaru thinks he’s fallen in love.
05: You are the best thing that’s ever been mine;
“Ne, Hikaru?”
“Yeah?”
Inoo gazes out at the reflections of the city lights shimmering on the surface of the river before replying.
“Do you remember when we first met?”
Hikaru chuckles.
“It was by this riverbank, wasn’t it?”
“Mm.”
“I thought you were some elven prince back then, you know. Standing out in the moonlight and all.”
Giggling, Inoo shoves Hikaru playfully.
“I’m human, stupid!”
“Oh, really?” Hikaru grins. “You sure you’re not some vampire or something, with the way you seem to sparkle so much!”
“Hey!” Inoo yells indignantly, blushing. “I’m not Edward Cullen or anything!”
A tickle fight ensues, until the couple collapse, giggling, onto the soft cool grass of the riverbank.
06: I had the time of my life with you;
“Daddy, is this your debut song?”
Hikaru blinked at the five-year-old boy rummaging through the CD cabinet.
“Yes,” he said. “That’s it.”
“Can I watch the music video?”
Hikaru winced, not wanting his son to see his general awkwardness back in his debut days, but after an attack of puppy eyes he had no choice but to give in.
“Alright.”
“Yay!”
A while later his son was cracking up, watching the screen.
“Uncle Chinen was so short back then! Well…not like he’s tall or anything now though.”
Hikaru grinned.
“Hey, Daddy?”
“Yeah?”
“Were you already in love with Daddy Kei back then?”
Smiling, Hikaru ruffled his son’s hair.
“You know what?” he said, watching his younger self dance away on the screen. “I think I might have been.”
07: Give me a photograph to hang on my wall;
Inoo likes to lie on his bed at night and play one of Heisei Stars’ albums on his computer.
He knows he has a giant celebrity crush on Hikaru, the bassist of Heisei Stars, and sometimes, listening to his voice crooning through the speakers, he can just imagine Hikaru is singing the lyrics of one of his band’s love ballads specially for him and him alone.
One day, he dreams of being able to go watch a Heisei Stars concert and waving a Hikaru uchiwa in the crowd. Maybe Hikaru’ll catch sight of him then, and maybe he’ll smile and wave, and make Inoo smile widely, irrationally.
And maybe, just maybe, a miracle will happen.
But until then, Inoo’s content to dream, looking at the Heisei Stars poster on his wall and just imagining.
08: Your name, forever the name on my lips;
“I’m sorry I never got the chance to tell you how I really felt,” Inoo murmurs.
There is no reply.
Smiling sadly, Inoo gets up.
“Goodbye,” he says for the last time, before walking slowly away.
The bouquet of flowers he leaves behind, just below the painfully familiar name carved into the cold stone tablet.
Goodbye, Hikaru. Let’s meet again…up in Heaven.
09: Time slows down whenever you’re around;
Hikaru smiles, running his fingers through Inoo’s hair gently.
“It’s like a dream come true,” he says, and Inoo beams at him.
“Like a fairytale.”
“Yeah.”
They stay silent for a while, Inoo snuggled up in Hikaru’s lap while Hikaru threads his fingers through the pale boy’s curly hair.
“And you’re the damsel in distress that I came to save, of course,” Hikaru adds thoughtfully after a while.
Inoo shrieks in mock rage, getting up.
“I’m not the princess!”
“Sure, sure,” Hikaru grins. “Keep deluding yourself.”
10: It’s a love story, baby just say yes;
Inoo thought the line sounded familiar.
“I’ll always be with you.”
Hikaru paused, and when Inoo didn’t reply he rolled his eyes and sighed.
“You’ve fallen for me, haven’t you?” he prompted, smirking slightly, and that was when Inoo’s mind clicked.
“Yes, yes I have,” he replied, trying to remember how exactly Makino had said those lines to Domyouji in the airport scene from Hana Yori Dango. “I’ve fallen for this stupid, selfish-”
He hadn’t been expecting Hikaru to cut him off with a hug, but then again he hadn’t exactly watched the drama thoroughly. He could feel Hikaru smile, lips brushing his ear gently.
In that moment, Hikaru deviated from the script, and Inoo felt something cool slip onto his ring finger. Pulling away, he lifted his hand to take a look.
On his finger sat a slim silver band.
He lifted his eyes to Hikaru’s, and saw the unspoken question there.
“Yes,” he whispered, hardly daring to believe it. “Yes!”
Hikaru smiled a smile so wide his eyes narrowed into slits.
“Our love will be as great as Makino’s and Domyouji’s!” he cheers.
Inoo rolls his eyes.
“Sappy idiot.”
