He sits by the windowpane, watching the raindrops slide down the glass as the thunder rumbles overhead.
The calendar is held loosely in his hand, today’s date marked out in red.
It’s their one-year anniversary today.
Or at least, he thinks to himself, it was supposed to be.
“I guess you’ve probably forgotten it,” he whispers out loud, breath fogging the cold glass.
“I wonder, are you smiling with him today?”
~
“Gomen,” Yabu said, “but…I think this is for the best.”
Inoo clenched his fists, tears coursing down his face.
“This…it’s because of him, isn’t it? Because you fell in love with Hikaru.”
“I’m sorry,” Yabu whispered again.
A final piercing gaze, and the door was shut, leaving Inoo to collapse on the cold tiled floor, broken and sobbing.

He doesn’t notice that the tears are falling until he looks down and sees the red ink smudged on the calendar.
Once more, that familiar smile and those kind words come to mind, and he finds himself missing Yabu even more than ever. But the more he thinks about him, the greater the yawning chasm between them grows, until it feels like there is an entire ocean separating them.
With a dull thud the calendar falls from his shaking hands to land on the floor, its pages splayed out like the broken wings of a dying dove.
He knows he misses Yabu.
So much.
And yet there is nothing he can do but keep the bittersweet longing locked away deep within his heart.
Just once more, he wants to say to Yabu, crying over the phone in a midnight phone call, just say it once more.
But he doesn’t dare to pick up the phone, afraid of the rejection he might get.
Even if it’s a lie, I still want you to say it once more. Just like that day a year ago…
I want to hear you say “I love you” once again.
