There is something so honest and true about Nathan and Haley when they interact. The mutual love and affection just shines through in every little word, touch, and action even with all the pain and regret and misunderstanding between them.
Nathan just wants to take care of her, making her breakfast and being there for her at the beach. And Haley she just always wants to take care of him too, letting him know that he deserved a support system back when the rape accusations went down and not being able to intentionally hurt him as much as she does need a target for her frustrations.
And Haley really is so conflicted. She already knows she's in love with him but her head won't let her heart do what it wants. She says it's hormones, but we all know better. Nathan sure does and I find it sweet and funny and heartwrenching how he's always saying "You know" to her and reminding her of all these things that he knows she already does know. Even if she won't admit them to herself because of sheer self-preservation. Like gently just reminding her that she is the only one that he wants or that them hugging at the beach, bodies pressed up together, feels so right and exactly where and how they're supposed to be.
Haley feels it all, he's right. But she doesn't know what to do with it. And despite herself, despite wanting to keep herself back, she can't deny him. She's so right that her downfall is not being able to intentionally hurt him. That's the only way he will go away is if she pushes him away, but she loves him too much to cause him such pain.
And Nathan admitted to her that he won't back off because he knows he can't afford to give her the time or space to push him away. He knows what his presence does to her, and he's taking full advantage of it. I loved his honesty in his confession to her that he is willing to cause her a little pain and irritation right now because he will give her a lifetime of happiness in the long run. The honesty in his words just broke me, as did the words about wanting to marry her and having a child with her.
And that's what really strikes me about Nathan right now. His honesty. Haley's right that he's gotten a whole heck of alot more perceptive. He knows he broke her trust, so he's doing his darnest to make sure she never again has reason to doubt her. So he's being heartbreakingly honest because she needs to know where he's at, where his heart and his head is at, and that he is in this 100%.
I loved the scene at the beach, because it reminded me of how Haley was there for him earlier when he told her all about the rape accusation. And now Haley, with all the stress from everything weighing down on her, needs someone and he was there for her. And it's really this mutual support and affection between them, after all the crap they've been through, that makes me believe Nathan's right. They're it for each other. And if Nathan keeps on like this, I have a feeling Haley will have to agree with him too. For now it really seems like she feels it, but her head needs to get where her heart's always been. With him.
AHHH!!! I really really enjoyed reading this.
