http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/06/30/MNG557E5A91.DTL Those fine representatives of ours are fightin' hard to have that gun ban extended, but even they admit it's quite unlikely.
"The NRA has lobbied hard, and so far successfully, to keep the House from voting on a bill to renew the assault weapons ban. A narrow majority in the Senate favors retaining the ban." Thus, it's up to the House (which has already promised to not let it to the floor)...
"It's also about politics. President Bush came out of favor of the assault weapons ban when he was running for president in 2000, calling the measure "a reasonable step.'' He also has promised to sign an extension if it is approved by Congress.
"The president's views on the assault weapons ban are well-known and unchanged,'' said Ken Lisaius, a spokesman for Bush.
But Feinstein, Boxer and other Democrats charge that Bush is not interested in breaking the current congressional deadlock. Feinstein called for Bush to pressure House GOP leaders to open the way for a vote on the extension."
Looks like Dubya ain't going to apply no pressure, neither.
I'm not a big supporter of the second amendment, or even think people *need* the right to own assault weapons... but if they're available, I'm going to exploit the opportunity, 'cause after this year's elections, the tides of Congress may change and an extension may be passed again.
