Songs speak louder than words

It's amazing and puzzling to me that someone who strongly brings to my mind these two "downer" songs:

Desperado, by The Eagles

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You've been out ridin' fences,
for so long now.
Oh you're a hard one,
I know that you've got your reasons.
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow.

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy;
She'll beat you if she's able.
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet.
Now it seems to me some fine things
Have been laid upon your table.
But you only want the ones
That you can't get.

Desperado,
Oh you ain't getting no younger.
Your pain and your hunger,
They're driving you home.
And freedom, oh freedom --
Well that's just some people talking.
Your prison is walking through this world all alone.

Don't your feet get cold in the wintertime?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine.
It's hard to tell the nighttime from the day.
And you're losing all your highs and lows;
Aint it funny how the feeling goes
Away...

Desperado,
Why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences; open the gate.
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you.
You better let somebody love you...
(Let sombody love you...)
You better let somebody love you...ohhh..hooo
before it's tooooo... late.

Walk Away, by Kelly Clarkson

You've got your mother and your brother
Every other undercover
Tellin' you what to say.
You think I'm stupid
But the truth is
That it's cupid, baby
Lovin' you has made me this way.

So before you point your finger
Get your hands off of my trigger
Oh yeah
You need to know this situation's getting old
And now the more you talk
The less I can take.

CHORUS:
I'm looking for attention
Not another question
Should you stay or should you go?
Well, if you don't have the answer
Why are you still standin' here?
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Just walk away
Just walk away
Just walk away

I waited here for you
Like a kid waiting after school
So tell me how come you never showed?
I gave you everything
And never asked for anything
And look at me
I'm all alone.
So, before you start defendin'
Baby, stop all your pretendin'
I know you know I know
So what's the point in being slow
Let's get the show on the road today
Hey

I'm looking for attention
Not another question
Should you stay or should you go?
Well, if you don't have the answer
Why are you still standin' here?
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Just walk away
Just walk away
Just walk away

I want a love
I want a fire
To feel the burn
Of my desires
I want a man by my side
Not a boy who runs and hides!
Are you gonna fight for me?
Die for me?
Live and breathe for me?
Do you care for me?
'Cause if you don't then just leave!

I'm looking for attention
Not another question
Should you stay or should you go?
Well, if you don't have the answer
Why are you still standin' here?
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Just walk away

If you don't have the answer
Walk away
Just walk (walk) away
(Just walk away)
Then just leave
Yeah yeah
Walk away
Walk away
Walk away

...also brings to my mind -- equally strongly! -- the following songs that are "up" and encouraging:

We Belong, by Pat Benatar

We belong, we belong to the light...

Many times I've tried to tell you
Many times I've cried alone
Always I'm surprised how well you
Cut my feelings to the bone.

Don't want to leave you really
I've invested too much time
To give you up that easy
To the doubts that complicate your mind!

CHORUS:
We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong! We belong
We belong together.

Maybe it's a sign of weakness
When I don't know what to say
Maybe I just wouldn't know
What to do with my strength anyway.

Have we become a habit?
Do we distort the facts?
Now there's no looking forward!
Now there's no turning back!

When you say
We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong! We belong,
We belong together.

Close your eyes and try to sleep now
Close your eyes and try to dream
Clear your mind and do your best
To try and wash the palette clean.

We can't begin to know it
How much we really care.
I hear your voice inside me
I see your face everywhere!

Still you say
We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong! We belong,
We belong together!

Keep Holdin' On, by Avril Lavigne

You're not alone
Together we stand
I'll be by your side, you know I'll take your hand.
When it gets cold
And it feels like the end
There's no place to go
You know I won't give in
No I won't give in!

CHORUS:
Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you.
There's nothing you could say (nothing you could say)
Nothing you could do (nothing you could do)
There's no other way when it comes to the truth!
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through...

So far away
I wish you were here
Before it's too late, this could all disappear.
Before the doors close
And it comes to an end
With you by my side I will fight and defend!
I'll fight and defend
Yeah, yeah

Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you
There's nothing you could say (nothing you could say)
Nothing you could do (nothing you could do)
There's no other way when it comes to the truth!
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through...

Hear me when I say (when I say) I believe
Nothing's gonna change (nothing's gonna change) destiny
Whatever's meant to be will work out perfectly
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

La da da da
La da da da
La da da da da da da da da

Keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you
There's nothing you could say (nothing you could say)
Nothing you could do (nothing you could do)
There's no other way when it comes to the truth!
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through...

Keep holding on
Keep holding on

There's nothing you could say (nothing you could say)
Nothing you could do (nothing you could do)
There's no other way when it comes to the truth!
So keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through...

(You can click each song for its lyrics; ALL are very moving! Interestingly, I just noticed that in each pair, there's one "classic" song and one "contemporary" one. heh)

3:30 p.m. EDIT -- I just got back to the office after taking a walk with my friend and co-worker Becky R. She deposited some checks at her bank and I got an ice cream at Baskin-Robbins. I intended to get an ice cream at the corner gas station, but they didn't have a good selection in their freezer. So instead I went to B-R, which was NOT what I'd planned, but which turned into cool SYNCHRONICITY because what should be playing on the store radio but Desperado?! And that's after I was thinking this morning about how I almost NEVER heard that song on the radio (either the Eagles version or the Clint Black one), and how I would like to hear it! In fact, I even thought of calling a radio station to request it, but apparently I didn't have to, eh? ;D How appropriate to hear that song today!
