I know I have at least a few people on my flist who are much wiser than I am and who have had more experience with "the college experience" than I have. So can someone please explain sororities and fraternities to me? Because as near as I can tell (and admittedly my principal sources are the internets, overheard Law and Order episodes, and word-of-mouth), they are basically like those little clubs you used to have in 1st-3rd grade where you had a seekrit handshake and a fake-ass written code, and a certain tree under which you would meet, and infinite tons of drama; only sororities and fraternities also rob you of any and all unique identity and include the opportunity to commit atrocious felonies while under the influence of a mob mentality. And then, you know,
only skrawny white people can join them. What exactly is the appeal here? I'm not being a smartass, I'm genuinely interested in the answer.
