Prompt: Transition
Why,
Natalie wondered as she scribbled her signature on the document before her, Why did this have to be so difficult?
Three years earlier, she had stood in front of a priest, God and countless family and friends while vowing to always love and honor the man who had stood beside her, 'until death do us part'.
This isn't exactly what I had in mind.
Cristian was no longer the man she had married, Natalie had no doubts about that. But then, she wasn't the woman he had married anymore either. Both of them had changed immensely over the past years, and since Cristian hadn't seen fit to tell her that he was really alive she had even allowed herself to move on--and fall in love with John McBain.
John.
She couldn't recall just when the transition from Cristian to John had taken place, only that her dreams had gradually gone from being memories of her and Cris's short time together to dreams of the future she and John might have. Some might have said that it was a quick transition, but to her it had been gradual--so gradual that she hadn't even felt it happening.
"That's it, ma'am--your divorce is final," the lawyer interrupted her thoughts, and Natalie waited for the crushing depression she felt sure would overcome her but instead all she felt was relief, almost like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
She didn't remember the journey there, but suddenly Natalie realized that she was standing in front of John's hotel room. Smiling, she knocked and waited, finally knowing exactly what it was that she wanted.
~
John heard the knock and his hopes flared. Could it be... No. He forced his hopes back down, refusing to let them be shattered again. It was probably just Michael wanting something.
He climbed out of bed and made his way over to the door, pulling it open to see Natalie standing there. Her eyes widened as she took in his state of undress--he wore only a pair of black jeans--and her tongue darted out to lick her lips.
Without thinking, John's arm shot out and wrapped around her waist, pulling her into the room and into a searing kiss as she kicked the door shut behind them.
Natalie tangled her hands in his hair as she returned the kiss, reveling in the transition they were making--from tentative friends to lovers once more.
Transition.
It's not always easy and sometimes it can hurt like hell, but every once in a while something is so right it makes everything else--all the tears and pain--worth it.
