Natalie Buchanan could not believe her eyes. Evangeline and Cristian were making out in Angel Square. On the one hand she knew that she shouldn’t care, but she couldn’t help herself. There was something so… wrong about the sight before her.
She continued to watch in horrified fascination, feeling like a voyeur but for some odd reason she couldn’t tear her eyes away. After a moment the two pulled apart and she quickly moved around the corner, peeking around it to watch them.
Evangeline laughed as he tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, letting his hand linger just a moment longer than necessary. Natalie felt a pang of jealousy go through her as he leaned in and kissed her rival sweetly.
He used to kiss me that way.
You let him go. Did you honestly think he was never going to move on?
Okay, good point but why does it have to be with her?
She groaned and turned, walking away as quickly as she could. But no matter how fast she walked, she couldn’t seem to rid herself of the images burned into her retinas.
Almost without realizing it she ended up at the Angel Square Hotel, knocking on John’s door. When he answered it her eyes filled with tears. He was a man possessed; the case was eating him alive and she knew it.
“Natalie?” he asked in confusion, seeing the tears beginning to fall.
“Can you-Can you just hold me?” she asked brokenly, moving into his arms without waiting for an answer.
John wrapped his arms around her and lowered his lips to her hair, kissing the top of her head gently.
After a moment she pulled back and he gently placed his hands on her cheeks. Her eyes never opening, Natalie moved her hands to hold onto his wrists, taking deep breaths.
“What happened?”
Her eyes opened and met his in a fiery gaze.
“I saw Evangeline and Cristian in Angel Square… They were kissing. I knew he was going to move on, but why did it have to happen so fast? And why her? Why does everyone pick her over me?” Her eyes were pleading as they searched his for an answer.
“Is that honestly what you think? That I picked Evangeline over you? Baby, I’ve loved you since the beginning. I used Evangeline to hide from my feelings but I never could quite escape them. It’s always been you.”
Her eyes widened. “What did you say?” John searched his memory and a smile tugged at his lips when he realized what she was referring to-all the fuss everyone made about the words, himself included, and they had slipped out easily at the right moment.
“I love you, Natalie.”
She slowly slid his hands from her cheeks to her neck, and then to her breasts as she stepped closer.
“Say it again,” she murmured, her breath catching in her throat at the desire she saw in his eyes.
“I love you,” he whispered, leaning down to capture her mouth in a passionate kiss. Her hands slid up his arms to his shoulder and then around his head to tangle in his hair.
After a moment Natalie broke the kiss, panting slightly. “I love you too, John,” she whispered, smiling softly.
