inspired by p.o saying sulli's his ideal type on like, two shows. and the songs we throw parties, you throw knives and you! me! dancing. idk, really weird and choppy, but i really enjoyed writing this.

This just wasn’t Jinri’s crowd. Jinri’s crowd was homecoming dances with tiaras and cream colored dresses, not house parties with free-flowing alcohol and no personal space.

She wasn’t supposed to be there, but unfortunately, she was.

“It’ll be fun, I promise!” Soojung insisted when Jinri shook her head, fear in her eyes and doubt heavy on her shoulders. She really didn’t want to, especially because, damn, it was a senior party, and they were just sophomores, and that just wasn’t right. And if there was one thing she hated, it was to be judged, especially by scary people like seniors.

But Soojung convinced her quite well that it would be alright, and that she was invited and they wouldn’t be intruding and it’d be an experience she’d definitely remember (“join the debate team, will you,” Jinri scowls as she’s forced into a tight highlighter pink bandage dress).

Fun, my ass, Jinri flared her nostrils a bit when they entered the house, bass pounding in her ears and people grinding against her legs. Soojung managed to be pulled away from her by some guy even though Jinri desperately tried to hold on. Now no one even vaguely familiar to her was in her line of vision.

“Oh god,” she muttered under her breath as she rubbed her arms in hopes it’d make her more comfortable. She wasn’t surprised that it didn’t work and she still felt as awkward as hell.

“Hey, babe,” an arm suddenly was slung around her shoulders and the smell of stale beer and saliva filled her nostrils. She didn’t dare breathe.

She knew in her heart that the rational way of dealing with this was to stay calm, smile politely at the guy, and inch her way out the front door and call her mom for a ride home while hiding in the bush she saw in the front yard (hopefully, no one would puke in it). Sadly, she was more of an instinctive person (she calls it so, but she’s really just easily scared) and her feet decided to run away out the backdoor and at the poolside, she stood.

She bit her lip in frustration as she shifted in her high heels. She didn’t want to go back in there, really, because it creeped the fuck out of her and she doesn’t even swear.

Her eyes lit up as she caught sight of a familiar head of brown hair.

“Amber! AMBER! Oh my God, Amber, you’re here!” she squealed as she rushed over to her friend, stumbling through the crowd. She tried not to look at the judgmental faces she passed and concentrated on her relief of finding someone she actually knew.

She reminded herself to stop making fun of Amber and calling her hyung all the time.

“Thanks so much for taking me in,” Jinri joked as she sat on a ledge of a window on the front lawn, where there weren’t much people.

Amber shrugged and tipped her red plastic cup up, gulping down the mixture of soda and alcohol. “No problem.”

“I can’t believe you’re drinking that,” Jinri said and made a face. “It looks disgusting.”

“Believe me, it’s ninety percent Coke,” Amber laughed. Jinri widened her eyes and Amber shook her head. “And by Coke I mean Coca-Cola, not drugs, okay? You know I wouldn’t do that!”

“I guess I never really thought you were the type. I mean, you’re so nice and all,” Jinri sighed and leaned her head back on the glass. She could feel it pounding from the volume of the music.

Amber just smiled at her. “Loosen up a bit, it’s alright.”

Jinri nodded in reply and grinned up at her friend. “I guess drinking’s not so bad,” she shrugged. She stayed still for a second, letting go of her judgment for alcohol drinkers, but her moment got ruined the second a group of guys - they looked like they were in college - walked in front of them and squatted on the grass beside them. She watched as they took out their lighters and cigarettes out of their front pockets then scowled.

“Now that’s what I can’t stand. Smoking,” Jinri frowned and Amber glanced at the guys beside her. “I mean, I guess it’s okay when you’re stressed. But at that age and just for fun and looking cool -“

“GUYS! How can you leave me like that? What the fuck -“ a tall guy with the lowest voice Jinri ever heard shouted, his shout muffled by a cigarette, running in their direction. He stopped, hands on his knees and panting, in front of them. He brought the cigarette out of his mouth and exhaled, smoke spewing from his lips.

Jinri cleared her throat, annoyed, and Amber chuckled.

The tall guy straightened himself up and looked in their direction. He looked a bit appalled and Jinri gulped. He looked kind of scary - the type to take your lunch money, she thought.

Surprisingly enough, he looked bewildered and bowed quickly a few times. “You really shouldn’t be here! Smoking can hurt you,” he started frantically, waving his hands at them and throwing away his cigarette in the process. His friends were toppling over, laughing at him. “No, really, you’re too pretty to have withered lungs! Please, go back inside!”

Jinri looked at him with slanted eyes and an open mouth. She wanted to say something, but she didn’t really know what. Amber snorted and pulled Jinri off the ledge by the arm and towards the entrance.

Amber let out a big laugh once they were out of earshot. “What an a-hole,” she said, rolling her eyes, “saying you shouldn’t be there because of something he’s doing.”

Jinri shrugged and stayed silent for a while.

“Actually, I think it was sort of sweet,” she said with flushed cheeks, looking up at the misty sky. “In a way.”

Amber looked at her suspiciously. “Was it because he called you pretty?” she laughed.

Jinri just smiled.

(She could still hear him if she strained her ears. “You guys are so stupid! How can you smoke in front of girls?! And pretty ones! Stupid!” he was saying.)

Monday again, Jinri thought with a sigh, as she slammed her locker door shut. She jumped a bit when she saw the tall guy from the party last Friday right in front of her, with his hand rubbing the back of his neck.

“Oh,” he started awkwardly, biting his lip and stepping back. “Hi.”

“Hi,” she replied, almost questioningly, with a raised eyebrow. “Wow, I didn’t know you went here.”

He opened his mouth then licked his lips nervously, and finally let his arms down at the sides.

“Yeah, I’m a junior,” he said, laughing dryly at himself. “Um, yeah, listen. Sorry about the guys smoking in front of you last Friday. They’re sort of dicks.”

“It’s fine,” she said with a small smile.

“I hope you didn’t, uh,” he licked his lips again. Jinri’s smile grew wider. “Inhale any of the smoke. Or anything.”

“I didn’t.” She kind of wanted to laugh in his face, but she bit her lip to stop herself.

“Good,” he let out a sigh of relief. “Good.”

A long bout of silence filled the air wherein Jinri fixed her bag and slung it over her shoulder and he looked at the ceiling and nodded to a nonexistent beat.

“So,” he finally broke the silence. “There’s going to be a party on Friday,” he looked at her hopefully, an embarrassed grin on his lips.

She looked at him with startled eyes. “Oh, I don’t really -“

“It’s not a drinking party or anything,” he waved his hands in front of his face like he did when he told her not to be there when his friends were smoking. “It’s just going to be a chill chips and house music sort of thing.”

“B-but -“

“U-unless you don’t like house music,” he bit his lip. “I could always request Jiho to play some pop. Or hip hop. Oh, yeah, hip hop’s good -“

“I’m not sure -“

“Oh, and no smoking! I promise, it’ll be fun,” he sounded a bit like he was pleading now, his eyebrows curving inwards like a sad puppy. His eyes lit up as she cracked a laugh.

“Okay, okay, I’ll go!” she laughed, wiping under her eyes. She composed herself quickly and smiled. “I mean, yeah. Sure. I’d love to.”

He let out another relieved sigh and straightened his back, shifting his backpack on his shoulders. “Cool,” he said. The first bell suddenly rang and he looked behind his shoulder, seeing groups of people starting to file in their classrooms. “See you later?”

She nodded and waved at him as he ran backwards in the opposite direction, waving at her with a huge grin on his face. She turned around and started to walk towards the sophomore corridor.

She felt a tap on her shoulder and spun around. It was the guy from earlier again.

“Uh, I forgot to tell you,” he was panting, hands on his knees and face looking up at her. Déjà vu, she was thinking. It was just like during the party. “Name’s Jihoon.”

“Jinri,” she replied, smiling.

He grinned and nodded, as if to say “I already know that”. “So, yeah, see you,” he said as he backed away again, waving once again.

“Yeah,” she exhaled, the corners of her lips still raised. She watched him turn around and run back to the junior corridor and she grinned to herself once he was out of sight.

“What a ‘tard,” she heard from behind her. She laughed once she saw it was Amber.

Jinri shrugged. “Mm,” she hummed, “I think he’s cute.”
