Last night I bought a copy of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for a friend's birthday. My library has so far refused to buy this title, though I've been urging the collection development librarian to consider its popularity. Case in point: the book store had exactly one copy left on the shelves. Actually, an employee had to scrounge for it and finally produced one just as I was on the cusp of leaving. On the hold shelf, I spotted two copies of the book waiting for those who had planned ahead. As the bookstore guy was ringing up my purchases he asked how the zombies figured in. I said I hadn't read it yet.
"What's the appeal?" he asked.
I looked at him like he was crazy. "It's Pride and Prejudice and zombies."
The appeal is self-evident.
