Restaurant week ended yesterday and I got to enjoy two restaurants - Butterfield 9 and La Tasca. The former had the most devine scallop appetizer - it was soft and melted like butter. I had marlin with mashed sweet potatoes for my entree, which was also good; however, I was more impressed with their risotto. I don't even like risotto and I liked theirs. Overall I loved the experience there. Too bad I can't say the same for La Tasca. I should have known it wouldn't have been impressive when they were playing modern rock and then techno in this Spanish restaurant. They were the oiliest tapas I've ever had and also on the bland side. The dessert was good, though.
I'm a food snob. It's almost not fair because I've eaten almost all of my favorite foods in their countries of origin, so I know how things are supposed to taste. So when I have food that's supposed to be from, say, Spain and it doesn't remind me at all of when or what I was eating it in Spain, it's sub-par. Besides that, I like food that's exciting and invigorating. Most chain restaurants don't have that special quality - they have a mass produced taste, which is how La Tasca tasted. Nothing special. Nothing where they took care to make it the best they've ever made. The only chain that I really support is the Great American Restaurants chain in this area, and it's not even much a chain. Their food is memorable. I like memorable food - food that makes you talk about how good it is... Food that you think everyone should try and then their lives will be complete. I'm always on the look out for places like that, so if you know of any, let me know.
In other news, I gotta get fitted for a bridesmaid dress today. For my brother's wedding. The color is victorian lilac. Pretty color on, say, pasty chicks. It's going to wash me out. At least the dress design is pretty, but man oh man. Wedding is in June. I think I'm the only one in my immediate family who's thrilled for it. Just a few more months...
