RPS really isn't my thing, but I just watched Be Kind Rewind and wow. Wow.

Mos Def/Jack Black. I ship it like Fed Ex.

More importantly, Be Kind Rewind is a really beautiful movie. It made me laugh, and it made me choked up. It is, at heart, about the power of telling stories for yourself, about how storytelling brings people together. We rented it on pay-per-view, and I just had to fast-forward through most of the movie to find this quote:

Our pasts belong to us. We can change it if we want.

In context, it's the key reason that the community *can* come together and make a movie about whatever they want. They don't need anyone's approval or permission. They can tell the story they want to tell, and it's really beautiful.

Moreover, this is a community that's facing eviction in the name of gentrification.

Out of context, it's not the most unproblematic statement. It works perfectly in the movie because the movie is, essentially, a fantasy. But I also believe that this is how history is always told. History is never really an objective recitation of facts, and it's good for everyone to remember that.

It's good for the people who don't have a say in how history is officially written to take charge of their own story in any way they can.

You don't need to be in Hollywood, you don't have to get a publisher, you don't need any outside approval or permission to tell a story that has power, to tell a story that means something.

made of magic and win, thinky thoughts, my crazy (let me show you)
