I love how subtly this is a 9/11 fic, and the overall somber tone. Once I realized that it *was* about 9/11, I went back and re-read it, and that knowledge creates a whole other, deeper layer for what happens between Mac and Danny here. There's a somber tone to all of this, and there's also a feeling of inevitability about it all.

I also love Mac reflecting on how things might have been different between him and Danny -- this fic is very much about the subjunctive, about what could have been and what never will be, and that holds true for the 9/11 aspect and the reflections on dead lovers as much as it does for what happens between Mac and Danny. I love the focus on that, and on the empty spaces that exist for them and in their lives.

The line about how he might love Danny, and how it doesn't matter if he does, is quietly heartbreaking in a way that, I think, encapsulates *everything* that's heartbreaking about this story, and maybe about their relationship.

Mostly? This reminded me of everything that means something to me about this pairing. It reminded me why I love them.
