Five Things Adam Notices that No One Else Does
1. Danny hums Springsteen under his breath when a case is going well.
2. Hawkes might know more cool, obscure facts than Adam-one day they need Danny to referee some sort of quiz competition-but Hawkes says even less about his personal life than Mac. It’s quite an accomplishment.
3. Lindsay keeps a stash of hard butterscotch candies in her bottom desk drawer, and she only hits them when she’s stressed. Adam wonders if she used to smoke but can’t picture her with a cigarette.
4. By now, everyone knows it Danny was who arranged the crimescene mock up dolls like they were having an orgy in the break room, but nobody saw Mac, um, adjust some of their positions.
5. Adam has no factual proof, not a shred of evidence, but Stella hasn’t been on a date since Frankie. Likewise, Adam is certain that she will be ready again, and soon.

1. Bullitt. Any movie starring Steve McQueen is worth at least a few watches.
2. The French Connection. Since we’re on the subject of classic movies with great car chases.
3. Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He loved that movie when he was a kid. Sure, a lot of it’s cheesy now, but Gene Wilder’s still brilliant.
4. Miracle on 34th Street. It’s a Christmas tradition.
5. Bringing up Baby. They don’t make movies like this anymore. Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn had real style and chemistry-and it’s fucking funny, okay?

Five People Mac Shouldn’t Have Slept With, and Why.
1.
At sixteen, Mac lost his virginity to Grace Ann Collins. She was a year older than him, porcelain pale and polished. At first he had felt safe with her; her parents were even more wealthy than his own. He should have known better.
2.
Mac is aware of how much pointless guilt he carries with him. Still, he wasn’t fair to Rose. He knew from the start that he wouldn’t be fair to Rose, that he couldn’t be. She smelled nice, like hyacinth and dew on the ground. She was nice. He didn’t care about her at all.

Mac was at a forensics conference in Colorado. He looked down at the program and froze. The date stared at him, Claire’s birthday printed in a bold sans serif font. He’d forgotten.
Once he could move again, he shoved the program into his pocket and left the hotel. He ended up drinking in a small bar, grateful for how the world softened at the edges. Next to him was another man, equally blurred with drink, who had a smirk that was bitter around the edges and who said I’ve known a lot of marines. It sounded like I’ve lost a lot of marines.
Under any other circumstances it would never have happened. Mac doesn’t allow himself to remember the man’s name, his eyes, his beautiful mouth.
