“Hi everyone!” Lindsay bounds into work one sunny New York morning, and stops dead when no one responds to her greeting. Everyone is staring through the glass walls and into Mac’s office, where there’s a dramatic scene taking place in the middle of the day for everyone to see. Lindsay decides to slip inside the office to see what all the fuss is about.
“Guys?” She asks, frowning. Nobody answers her.
Mac and Don are locked in a vicious shouting match, but they’re yelling so loudly on top of each other’s words that Lindsay can’t quite make out they’re actually arguing about. She catches Danny’s name, as well as Louie’s and Sonny’s. She hears a lot of obscenities, too, and blushes a little.
Danny keeps looking between Mac and Don, and a single tear unconsciously escapes his brimming eyes and trails down his cheek. “Don’t do this, please,” he begs. “My parents used to yell all the time. I hate it.”
Meanwhile, Stella and Hawkes are camped out on Mac’s couch, passing a bowl of hot buttered popcorn back and forth, and betting on who will win the sandy-haired CSI’s heart.
“My money’s on Mac.” Hawkes nods and passes Stella the popcorn. “After all, he could kill a man with his bare hands.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t rule Flack out just yet.” Stella offers as a rejoinder. “He’s just as stubborn as Mac; plus, he and Danny are proper friends. They’ve spent a lot of time together outside of work. They get all sweaty playing basketball, and then they take showers together.” Her Greek curls bounce as she nods wisely and eats a few bites of the buttery, salty goodness. “Can I get a little brown sugar on this?”
“Sure, baby.” Hawkes leans over and kisses her sweetly.
“Um, Stella? Sheldon?” Lindsay tries to get their attention, but they seem entirely focused on each other now. “Isn’t anyone going to ask what happened to me this weekend?”
But Stella and Sheldon are too busy playing tonsil hockey now to hear Lindsay’s question, let alone answer it. The fight for Danny’s affection and the bowl of popcorn are both forgotten. Lindsay reaches over and carefully rescues the bowl of popcorn before it falls to the floor.
“Oh, uh, hi Lindsay.” Adam bumps into Lindsay as he walks into Mac’s office-which is getting awfully crowded by this point. The red-headed lab tech has sheaves of lab results stacked high in his hands, and they almost scatter to the ground. “I’ll ask what happened to you this weekend, but can I ask why Danny is crying first?” He bites his lip, worriedly.
After all, Danny is crying now. He weeps openly as Mac and Don circle each other like the calico cat and the gingham dog. From time to time, the brilliant yet emotional sandy-haired CSI plucks ineffectually at Mac’s sleeve or Don’s jacket, trying to get both of them to back off.
“Oh.” Lindsay blinks, trying to figure it out. “I’m late to the party myself, but I think they’re fighting over Danny.” The midwestern girl tucks her hair behind her ear, showing off her new row of rainbow-colored ear piercings. She frowns over at the Danny, who is trapped between Mac and Don. Don is scowling at the ex-marine and has one hand protectively wrapped around his lover’s arm. Mac looks like he might just pull out his gun, shoot Don, take Danny home, and tie him to the bed-just be done with everything.
“Please, stop this,” Danny sobs.
“Hey, buddy,” Adam walks over and puts a comforting hand on Danny’s shoulder. “Want to go play some Playstation? I snuck one in the other day, and we can hook it up in the breakroom.”
Don and Mac’s heads whip up as one, and they glare at Adam.
“Whoa, sorry.” Adam backs away slowly. “Me and Danny are just friends, I swear. I mean, I’ve already got a girlfriend.” He keeps backing slowly away until he can hide behind Lindsay.
“So, Lindsay, what’s new with you?” Adam asks, using Lindsay as a shield in case Mac and Don decide to pursue him.
“Oh, I’m gay,” Lindsay says, unable to tear her eyes away from her boss and the homicide detective as they return to their argument over her apparently captivating sandy-haired co-worker. “I’m a lesbian now.”
“Really?” Adam creeps out from behind Lindsay, shooting nervous glances over at where Mac and Don are still arguing. “I, uh, kinda already thought you were a lesbian.”
“You did?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh.” Lindsay frowns, wondering how that happened. She thought that she had hidden it so well. She had hit on Danny, after all. Except the battle royale unfolding on the other side of Mac’s office probably meant that Danny was gay. Huh. Lindsay felt confused.
“I mean, I don’t care if you’re a lesbian. I think it’s cool,” Adam assures her, patting her shoulder in a carefully platonic manner.
Then the door to Mac’s office slams open.
“Flack-answer your damn cell phone once in a while!” Detective Maka shouts as she bursts into the room. “Sarge sent me down here to find you.”
“Kaile!” Lindsay grins as the beautiful Asian detective strides into the center of the office.
Kaile Maka takes one look at the tableaux before her and rolls her eyes. “Stella, can’t you keep these boys in line?”
“Usually, but I’m busy right now,” Stella mutters into Sheldon’s mouth.
“Don, Mac!” Maka shouts. The men look over, startled. “Why don’t you just get over it and have a threesome?”
Stella and Hawkes stop sucking face for long enough to look around the room. Stella sits up and adjusts her blouse so that her bra is no longer showing.
“You know, guys, that’s not a bad idea.” Stella tilts her head thoughtfully, and a slow lecherous grin spreads across her face.
“Leave it to the lesbians to teach us how to share.” Hawkes smiles enigmatically, then he dives back in to leaving a hicky on Stella’s shapely collarbone.
Don sighs, and rubs Danny’s arm. “I just want Danny to be happy.”
“That’s what I want too,” Mac says warily. “Do you really think you can give that to him better than I can?”
“What I’ve been trying to say,” Danny says quietly, wiping his face. “Is that I love you both, and I don’t want you to fight over me.”
“Aw, I love you too, cuddlebum.” Don leans down and leaves a soft kiss on Danny’s wet cheek.
Mac’s hard eyes seem to melt. “I love you too, Danny,” he whispers, and places a kiss on his CSI’s other cheek. He turns to the homicide detective and holds out his hand. “It occurs to me that if we work together instead of against each other, we can make Danny very happy.”
Don frowns and nods. “I think it’s worth a shot.” He takes the ex-marine’s hand and shakes it. Then the raven-haired detective tilts his head contemplatively and finally leans in to give Mac a quick peck on the mouth. The ex-marine licks his lips and looks thoughtful.
“Um, Mac?” Adam creeps over and finally deposits his stack of papers on Mac’s desk. “Here are those lab results you wanted. And, uh, in the spirit of true love and everything, do you think I could have Friday off, so I can go visit my girlfriend in DC? Her name is Abby, and she works for NCIS down there, and she’s really awesome-”
“Adam,” Mac interrupts, frowning. “Sure, fine, in the spirit of true love, you can go visit your girlfriend.” He looks around the room. “See, I’m not a completely bitter hard-ass.”
Maka claps her hands together. “Well, I’m glad that solves that.” She raises her eyebrows and holds a hand out to Lindsay. “So, are you doing anything tonight, Monroe?”
