Airship!

Aug 28, 2010 12:17

I've heard rumors about this the last week or so, but this morning, casually glancing out of my living room window, I saw it: an airship tooling its way across the sky almost directly over my house!

I was as far away from my camera as one can be in my house, so I bolted (scaring the cats), grabbed my camera, and burst onto the balcony, shooting as I went. I wanted to yell "Airship! Zeppelin!" at the top of my lungs so the whole neighborhood would know...but, being of somewhat sound mind, I knew that most of my neighbors are not the geek I am and would not appreciate my disturbing in the morning quiet.

I was shooting almost right into the sun, and if it hadn't been so overcast, I wouldn't have gotten any detail at all. As it is, I had to adjust this a little to clean it up and lighten the zep enough to make the letters visible. Maybe I'll take it into Photoshop and clean it up properly later. It's not art, but it's a decent shot, I think.

To quote the West Seattle Herald:

"The Farmers Airship zeppelin...is based at Paine Field until Sept. 8.

"It is 246 feet long, 64 feet wide and 54 feet high. It can carry a crew of two and 12 passengers, and is 14 feet longer than a standard Boeing 747.

"The airship is usually based in northern California, but will be in the Northwest for the next few weeks. Beginning in Salem, Oregon then making its way to Paine Field."

The thing must have been flying relatively low because from my balcony it looked enormous.

It was, by far, the coolest thing I've seen in a long time.
