Dinner at El Camino

Had a perfectly lovely dinner last night with greyjoy at El Camino in Fremont. I haven't been there in years, and when the choice was between two restaurants I regularly frequent and this one, it was a no-brainer. They present themselves as serving contemporary Mexican cuisine, but the menu is so much more than that.

I had the Salmón con Tamarindo, described in the menu thusly: "Fresh, wild salmon glazed with tamarind is grilled & served with mashed sweet potatoes & sautéed seasonal greens. Served on tomato caldillo." The salmon was flaky and perfectly prepared. The tamarind sauce made all the difference, a tangy flavor that made the salmon taste like something very new. The mashed sweet potatoes were very good, though I admit--upon consideration--that they were a little milder and a little moister than I would have preferred. This didn't reduce my enjoyment in the least, honestly. It's more of a note for myself for the next time I go there, which I surely will. I had a sauvignon blanc with the meal, which turned out to be a fine choice.

El Camino: Recommended.

And the company? Also, recommended.
