A note about Seattle and Labor Day Weekend

Every year, one thing is certain: Seattle has an incomparably beautiful summer and then, come Labor Day Weekend, the weather changes, as though someone had flipped a switch. We went from mild, lovely, sunny days to overcast and rainy weather literally overnight. It's as though some climatic power had a calendar that designated Labor Day not just as the official end of summer but as the official end of nice weather.

While I will admit to liking the change--the region badly needs the rain--I will also admit, like the Long Island native beach baby that I am, that I hate to see the pleasant weather go. I didn't get to sit on my balcony in the sun much this year, and I didn't get to the beach, any beach at all, even once. The only opportunity I had to sit by a pool in a bathing suit (when I was in SoCal) was stymied by my scheduling myself to be social. I don't regret the social time for a moment, make no mistake. But I did gaze out the hotel windows at the pool longingly as I waited for my elevator or for my ride to the next destination.

I'm not really a resort-vacationing type. When I travel, I prefer cities, historical places, ruins or wilderness of one sort or another. I want adventure. But every now and then, beach sitting and sun bathing have their appeal. It looks like my opportunity for that has passed me by this year--unless we get an absolutely spectacular Indian summer. We'll see, I guess.

Last night, I pulled another light blanket over my summer quilt, and early this morning I woke a little too cold to be sleeping in the buff (that's what I get for sleeping with a window cracked open). Autumn is coming; it's in the air. And I'm already longing for the sunshine.
