de.li.cious

One of the things I realized after the "If You Build It, They Will Come" panel at Writercon* is that I've not been making the best use of available "community" resources. Case in point, de.li.cious. When I first signed up I bookmarked tons of things and ended up with a disjointed wodge of data that seemed impenetrable. So I walked away. Clearly ( Read more... )

SVilleficrecs talk about how to be useful to others. Herre's how to use other good recs: I use it as a combined rec list via subscriptions and bundling.

See http://delicious.com/subscriptions/cathexys/bundle:spn for my SPN/J2 subscription, for example. It takes a moment to set up--find your favorite reccers that are consistent, consistent taggers, and whose taste you like. Both ratcreature and frogspace are great examples on how to tag and bundle well. You can subscribe to a particular tag (that way you don't get everyone's bazillion other things, other fandoms, personal stuff).

You can network people, which is another option and gives you all their bookmarks, but I love the subscription model (caveat: it doesn't always work apparently and relies on people not only bookmarking but also tagging consistently).

Oh, and a final one for newsletters (yes, dead horse and all :): if you use delicious to save links, you actually not only have everything ready to autopost but you also have a searchable database that's more useful than going through old newsletters! (I've stopped subbing to newsletters actually mostly and just reading their delicious tags). Examples of ones I am/used to be involved in: http://delicious.com/metafandom/ (I actually have that one in my igoogle as a feed); http://delicious.com/sga_newsletter; http://delicious.com/sga_flashfic (we're backtagging on that one which is a pain, but it allows us to cover both LJ and DW!)

Aldo, there are great Firefox extension tools which make memorying quite easy. I'm gonna look for the instructions Lim wrote up for metafandom a couple of years ago but they're still mostly valid, I think...

headdesk. i went through the entire metafandom folder in my email and couldn't find lim's instructions--because i'd written them. argh! need coffee. anyway, i'm c&ping bc it isn't that long:

INSTALL:

Greasemonkey https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
Delicious Complete http://delicious.mozdev.org/installation.html

CUSTOMIZE:
Tools + Add-Ons + Delicious Complete Add Metafandom Account
Account: metafandom
Password: *******

ADD LINKS:
Highlight a short passage of text, right-click with your mouse, and, from the menu,
select delicious> post current page.

In order to not doublepost and have a certain uniformity, make sure you’ve done the following:

• have page in most basic format + ?format=light [delicious cannot recognize same page if URL is different, so we’d end up doubleposting]
• make sure you stay under 255 characters in your description (the script lets you know how many you have…cut accordingly or it’ll cut off the end)
• give the appropriate tags. I’ve tried to keep them simple and matching with what we’ve been using, so there are pretty much the big categories we’ve had: fandom, fanfic, writing, reading, vidding, reviewing, reccing, feedback, where a post can be in more than one category (like reading&writing), but I’d say it’s obvious that writing is fanfic, so fanfic should read as fanfic meta.
Then there are form categories that should be added for polls and questions and links.
Finally, for specific fandoms I’ve included the going ones.
If you feel the need to add a new category, please think about it and see if the already existing ones might work!

You can check what is in the memories at http://del.icio.us/metafandom

If you actually want to make changes, you’ll need to log in:
https://secure.del.icio.us/login
Account: metafandom
Password: *********

****

Alternatively, if you do not want to use Firefox or if you do not have your own delicious account, you can simply log into the metafandom delicious account and save everything via a small button: http://del.icio.us/help/buttons

Here you must copy the text, click the button which will get you to a delicious update page, paste the text, add tags and memory. It’s not much more awkward, but you cannot use it if you plan to juggle various accounts without logging in and out every time.

Thank you! There is a lot of really great stuff here. I think part of the issue is determining what I want my delicious account to *be*. Once I get that clear I can determine the best format to accomplish that goal.

Oh, and a final one for newsletters (yes, dead horse and all ;)

*g*

I am not totally inflexible. Just because something doesn't work for us now doesn't mean that it won't in the future. Are there any tutorials or instructions? It's been ages since I've looked into the delicious script (a hard drive ago *weeps*) and I no longer have any bookmarks. Since we are a very democratic model and personnel shift all the time, it's a concept that might be received differently now than when first proposed.

Thanks again for all of your tips. Your enthusiasm about the use of delicious was one of the things that prompted me to take a closer look at my v.v. neglected account.

Cool :) It's really been such a life saver!

Well, the instructions on how to memory and set up the delicious saving are what I posted in the comment. The script itself I never actually dealt with. Lemme ask someone and I'll get it to you.

OK, apparently there's a reason I knew nothing about that end--bc it's a tad more complicated. But the other newsletter editors are always helpful (I just IMed with mamoru22 whom i worked with on the SGA newsletter and who also founded and runs the Merlin one and she said to just contact her and she'll happily give you ins and outs, advantages anmd disadvantages, etc) and murklin, who wrote and customizes the script is immensely nice and helpful!

Thanks for brokering. ;) I'm getting ready to decamp to the mountains and, immediately after that, to the shore for two weeks but will definitely drop mamoru22 a note before I go.
