de.li.cious

One of the things I realized after the "If You Build It, They Will Come" panel at Writercon* is that I've not been making the best use of available "community" resources. Case in point, de.li.cious. When I first signed up I bookmarked tons of things and ended up with a disjointed wodge of data that seemed impenetrable. So I walked away. Clearly ( Read more... )

A: I love delicious, even though i'm hit or miss about being good at tagging,
B: This comm should help http://community.livejournal.com/deliciouslymad/profile
C: I find that a top down approach w/ *some* tags at the time of tagging helps, then I go back and tag in more detail. (I tag most things fic or nonfic, and if they're fic I tag them with at least the fandom)
D: Tag bundles are your friend.
E: Tag prefixes are your friend. For example, all my fic fandom fic:fandom. Like fic:ironman or fic:SCC etc (so they're grouped together on the side bar.)
F: When in doubt, bookmark, and you can always click "do not share", then go back and tag properly when you have the time.
G: Take the time, every couple days, or week, or whatever depending on your frequency of bookmarking, to go back and tag the recent stuff. For example, w/ fic I usually do fic fic:fandom pairing/people . Then when I go back and have the time, I do rating, length, etc. For nonfic stuff I can usually get away with fewer tags.
H: It takes some work to develop a system that works for you. It's not like you'll be able to find *the key* and suddenly it'll work perfectly. You've got to strike the balance between the broader tags (fic, nonfic) and the minutia tags (4k-8k, established-relationship, offworld). If you're consistent about getting the bigger tags down, it makes going back and tagging a lot easier. You'll discover what doesn't work, and what works for you over time.
I: Renaming confusingly named links at the time of tagging (or at least putting comments) helps for that weekend when you're scanning down a list of 50 links with confusing titles. Like changing "Sometimes Evil Drives A Minivan - Post a comment" to "Scarlettgirl's Request for Delicious Tips"
J: my delicious, keeping in mind that for the last few weeks I've been super shitty about tagging fic. My system remains, though.

HAVE FUN.

Great tips, thank you! I like the idea of "do not share" until it's ready for prime time and tag prefixes. I think, as I said above, that an overabundance of tabs bogs things down for me so it really is finding a workable system for me. But seeing how other people navigate is really, really helpful. Like you said, there's no "key" but lots of possibilities.
