So as some of you may have noticed, LJ was down yesterday. This isn't that big of a deal. Really, it's not. To those idiots who are whining that they deserve compensation, seriously, stop and think about priorities. You want compensation for a service that you use to blog. BLOG. While the folks at livejournal are being nice and working on ways to ( Read more... )

I've had a free LJ account since 2003 and just really like having an online journal I don't have to pay for. Yeah, like I'm gonna piss and moan because there was a power outage affecting their database. You're right. We all use this to record our thoughts and daily happenings. Wanting compensation is ridiculous. No one gets a rebate when their electricity goes out for a few hours. Sheesh.

The only time I've ever gotten compensation for when the power or phone went out was when it was over 12 hours and even then, only because I called.

actually, compensation for loss of services (electric, water, etc) when applicable (i.e. not act of god) is fairly common. Hell, I get compensation on my cable bill all the time for lost services.

It's not fairly common for everyone. Most of the time, people I know have had to call to get it taken off the bill and honestly, it's usually not worth the hassle to do that.

Does it usually requre a phone call? Sure it does.

Is it worth the hassle? Potato/Potahto.

I weigh it as time spent getting the money back vs time spent I could be doing something to make money or to enjoy my life. In general, I find the latter outweighs the former almost every single time.

Yep, that's it. We, as a society, are to "me, me" oriented, too. :-)

Another thing about utilities other than cable (ie: phone, gas, electricity, water service, garbage service) -- occasional mistakes happen. It doesn't make sense to me to ask for compensation because an electric company employee working to make your power lines better accidentallty does something that takes power down for a few hours.

Hey, why not see it as a chance to kick back and relax for a while with a good book? Even if you have to use a candle. Or, some conversation with a friend or mate? :-)

Whoa. I don't think that's what she meant at all. Let's all try and play nice or I'll be forced to post pictures of me shooting a kitten.

Noooooo! Not shooting a kitten! How about shooting a potato bug? They're much uglier. :-)

Awww. What do you have against the potato bug? Poor bastards never asked to be that ugly. I demand you compensate me for this stress and outrage.

Hey, just trying to lighten it up a bit. Ease up, ok? The only time I've ever gotten "compensation" from a utility was a $150 charge on my phone bill for an upgrade to wiring. Was never done, never asked for. It took 2 weeks to get it taken care of. Every day on the phone, for 30 minutes or more. The only reason it was worth it to me was because it was $150. I have a disability, MS. I'm low-income. But the stress of dealing with the automated crap of utility companies is -- literally -- not worth it to my health.

unless your power is out for 5 days in the dead of winter like happened to us this last winter. (im akbar56's wife)
although that was storm related.we did not seek compensation. even though we could have gotten our food that spoiled reimbursed.

but our electric meter was not going since we were not using any electricity thus we were not being charged.

regarding lj:
although for 7 hours even if it was their fault i wouldn't feel the need for compensation. maybe 24hrs.

I never got compensation for cable outages that were their fault. I called. I wrote. I got stuck on hold for literally hours. I finally got through to upper management person and was told it was just one of the things any utility user has to put up with. Of course, I no longer have cable, for TV or internet.

I do not think it's as common as you believe to get compensation for other utilities.
