So as some of you may have noticed, LJ was down yesterday. This isn't that big of a deal. Really, it's not. To those idiots who are whining that they deserve compensation, seriously, stop and think about priorities. You want compensation for a service that you use to blog. BLOG. While the folks at livejournal are being nice and working on ways to ( Read more... )

I agree with you, however as a service that I pay for I am bothered when it is non-functional. This was due to a power outage which I categorize as "act of god" and can not be fought against. If it is due to LJ pushing new code on the system and it being buggy and causing major crashing (like Netflix did yesterday) I do feel that an extension of my account payment should occur. LJ has done this in the past for their fuck ups.

Eh. While I understand that it's frustrating when you pay for something and it doesn't work perfectly, 7 hours isn't really enough to warrant compensation even if it IS from buggy new code. If this were my bank then sure maybe... But it's my blog service.

Our opinions will just have to differ on this one. If I pay for a service, I expect it to meet the requirements I expect it to. I see no difference between a bank web site and my blog service.

What if I have my portfolio up online and all images are hosted by LJ (we don't need to argue the merits of an online biz should have a backup ready to go.) If I lost business yesterday because of the down time, is that ok?

If someone is silly enough to use LJ in their business dealings then they kind of deserve what they get. If the site is down for more than 24 hours, then I kind of understand wanting compensation but 7 hours is just a bit ridiculous.

How exactly is it silly?

For 25 bucks a year I get gigs of storage space for image hosting and no hidden bandwidth fee.

You seriously think that it's a good idea to use Livejournal to host things that are business related? That's really surprising to me. While it's cheap, it's obvious that it's not a great solution since LJ can get rather buggy from time to time and it's not like they can really compensate you for lost business... On the other hand, when I worked for Tangled, when our stuff went down, our hosting compensated us several hundred dollars due to lost revenue. Mind you, we paid more for the service but there's a reason for that.

I think you are missing my point. We don't need to debate the merits of using one service or another. My point is when I pay for something that is advertised as a 24/7 available service, when it is not available outside of accepted maintenance I take issue with it.

Do I want compensation for yesterdays outage? No, since it was act of god stuff. However, if it was LJ's fault, then yes I would expect my paid account to be credited 7 hours on my expiration date.

And my issue with that is that while they are working to give you your seven hours of compensation, they could be working to actually fix the code that's causing the problem.

compensation need not be right away. Besides, adding 7 hours to every paid users expiration date should be an easy fix. Hell, they should have something in place already that does that.

But it is apparent that they do not. I just don't really feel that given how cheap it is to use livejournal for a year, that losing it for 7 hours requires some sort of compensation. To me, it's just petty.

It may be petty to you, but to others it is how they look at the value of something.

Would you be happy if you put in a gallon of gas in your car and suddenly while you are driving around 1/8 of that gallon was gone and you never got it back?

Frankly, I probably wouldn't be that upset. I've been on livejournal a long time and I've rarely had any problems that weren't resolved in under 24 hours. I'm not going to complain about 7 hours because the ratio of good service to bad service to me says that I've gotten what I paid for. Things break from time to time. The problem was resolved as quickly as possible and I doubt anyone developed any health problems or emotional instability from the loss. At the end of my paid time, I highly doubt that 7 extra hours is going to do all that much since I normally get it taken care of before it expires.
