How I found out.. scarlett_0 May 5 2011, 15:39:11 UTC
"How did you find out?"

Well I've known for a while but my parents weren't yet convinced.

I started tracing just as a little gift to my dad because my father's origins have always been a mystery. He was estranged from his father and knew nothing about his family. He didn't even know his grandfathers name.
So I felt it would be good for him to know at least something about his family because he didn't always have the greatest life. But I never thought I could trace his line so far back much less find out this!

So I started digging around on ancestry.com and found out who my great-grandfather was and just started tracing from there. And I found out our ancestry traced straight back to Sir Walter Raleigh..... but I really couldn't believe it. I was skeptical.

So my parents called yesterday (they are traveling) and said they were in Salt Lake City , Utah and stopped by the genealogy wing of the huge Mormon Temple there (we're not Mormons.) As you probably know they have the largest collection of genealogy in the world.

So my mom asked a lady there to help her trace my father's ancestry and sure enough it went straight to Sir Walter Raleigh.

I felt so elated because my parents really didn't know if they could trust it when I first told them but now they know for certain. Plus my 72 year old dad was treated so poorly by his real father and has always felt shameful of him. So now instead of feeling ashamed he can feel proud of his family history. Plus Sir Walter Raleigh is such a huge part of NC history!!! We learned so much about him in school. And we're just regular peeps, not from a privileged background at all, so it really was a big thing for us.

And I agree. He does look like a very handsome man. I don't blame the Queen for falling for him!
