my dear friend audra (well, her mom, actually) wrote and asked why my mom's house is for rent. so, i will try to summarize this and other timely topics in my life.
my mom met (or re-met) this guy- someone my dad met back in vietnam, and a friend of the family for years. he and his wife got divorced a couple years before my parents did. he always kinda had a crush on my mom, and he sent her xmas cards every year. on a whim she sent him one back and thus opened a whole can of worms. she kinda freaked out at first because she never really went back into the "dating scene" or whatever. but she was going to be coming to my wedding and had gotten all svelte, and so they started talking online. see, he lives in vermont. well, skipping over the middle, they are getting married. this coming week, actually. she made the scandalous decision to move to vermont because ollie (that's the guy, as i'm sure you guessed) couldn't find a job in tiny e'prise, but has a very good job in vermont. so instead of selling her house she's keeping it and they plan to retire there in 5-7 years, when it will be totally paid off. they are also going to have a courthouse wedding here in atlanta on their way back to vermont.
personally, i'm really happy that my mom's doing all this- it's about damn time. i mean, my dad got remarried last year, so let's just get all the weddings done. i'm also happy to have a reason to visit vermont, where i almost moved a few years ago (but i'm glad i didn't, or i never would have met my dear husband). so that's the story. exciting, huh?
in other news, michael's van was broken into and all his work equipment stolen- only to be found again (minus a trimmer and blower) in our friendly neighborhood police station. apparently someone "reported these items found" and that is all we can get out of the cops. pretty weird in my opinion.
we are also refinancing our house. so much fun, really. when i got my house i didn't have an enormous work history, so i ended up with a really crappy deal- one of those 2/1 ARM deals. so basically i have to refinance, pay $5500 in closing costs AGAIN just 2 years after we bought the house, and have a higher monthly payment, just so they don't keep jacking up the price every 6 months. it wasn't completely subprime, like you probably read about in the news, but more like alternative-A. anyways, that's nice, stressful, and i recommend that if/when you buy a house, talk to friends who have been through it, and make sure you can afford the deal you get initially.
my job is going okay, but i still wonder about other things i could do. i want to start writing again, but getting the energy even to write all this is a challenge. ah, us depressive types and our art...
so that's the news here. really exciting. now i'm going to do a little work and watch lots of movies. escapism rules.
