So I hear some happy news from my mother

My mother delightedly told me this morning that it looks like the legislatures are on the fast track to voting prop 8 repealed. I have a good feeling about it. Problem is certain laws need to be changed.

First and foremost: A Constitutional Amendment (or revision) should require 2/3 approval before being passed. I know that could be irritating so someone looking a the vote saying 'But the majority said yes!' Well as we've learned so many times throughout history, majority is not always right. ESPECIALLY when the laws in question limit or take away the rights of others.

Second: There should be a law about out of state funding. Other states have no business getting involved in our state's laws.

Third: Churches (as a whole) should not be allowed to donate to anything political. Individuals and organizations, yes. But an entire church? The reason churches are tax exempt is because the federal constitution clarifies 'separation of church and state'. If a church chooses to blur or ignore that separation, then they should lose their tax exempt status. Futhermore, it is not right for religious front runners (such as clergy or the higher-ups) to encourage any kind of manner in which to vote. I don't mind if you say 'go vote!' That is more like responsibility. But 'vote yes on 8' is IRresponsible.

I'm still hopeful. I'm not sure how much I trust the supreme court (which I hate saying). And I know it won't go over well if this eventually gets there and the court accepts the case and decides it's against the Constitution, but ultimately it's not right to infringe on others' freedoms. We are talking about consenting adults having the freedom to make their own choice. Not just about who they marry, but if they even can.

If the problem has to do with God, God will judge me. That is not your job. And any priest can choose not to head the ceremony, as they would ALWAYS have the right to do.
