My field instructor told me today that she and Jane (an emergency services therapist) noticed that I have great reflective listening skills, and that clients can really tell that I am listening to them. She also said I did a good job identifying strengths and focusing on the positive aspects of client circumstances. This was in regards to two clients I sat in with yesterday... for a total of about 4.5 hours straight :-P
Needless to say that was a nice confidence booster. I love this work already.
In other news, I dropped my administrative skills class... I want as much time as possible to devote to my field placement. I'm hoping to pick it up in the spring (assuming some people drop) or next summer. This was a big stress reliever... I now have two classes and my internship, where I think I will be spending a lot more than 16 hours per week.
Also, I'm going back to Ele's Place! I volunteered there for about two years back in undergrad; it's a center where they run support groups for children (and parents) who are experiencing grief and loss issues. I'll be co-facilitating a group of middle schoolers on Tuesday nights along with my good friend Nan from the Listening Ear :) I'm pretty excited to dig in and get some exposure to an age group I'm not that familiar with.
Overall, I'm really busy right now, but life is good.
