Define 'better'. The PSP is beautiful, but it doesn't have one single, solitary game I'm interested in. Not one. Perhaps it will later. And Sony are doing their very best to restrict me from doing all the other cool things I might want to do with it, like download videos and play MAME.

I spent a couple of months not buying because of this impossible choice -- oh, god, what do I do, do I get large, beautiful PSP or small cute GameBoy Micro or weird, not-fish-not-fowl DS? I was persuaded to buy the DS by my Local Independent Games Shop. I could not be more delighted with it. I was a bit surprised really by how intensely I like it; I played my GBASP fairly extensively but Only Zelda. And there is no Zelda for the DS. Not yet.

I would much rather have something that had the DS capability but the screensize of the Micro (so essentially double the Micro's size) -- and I'm sure that will be coming.

To some extent I missed a trick; until a year and a bit ago I had almost totally ignored Nintendo. You know, special hardware, less technically ept, that sort of thing. And I got a GameCube to play bongo drums. And played the odd other game, and suddenly discovered that Nintendo's entire strategy is this: to have All The Best Games.

So, what do you want? A nice screen, or All The Best Games?

For the DS I now have 5 games, of which 3 are yummy, 1 is so so, and one is a complete dog and must be sold on. The yummy ones are Nintendogs (woof!), Metroid Prime Pinball (closest thing to pinball in your pocket ever), and Mario Kart DS. The so-so one is ZooKeeper, where reviewers who liked it clearly knew little about casual games. The dog is Atari Retro Classics; I bought it for Tempest and the implementation is truly terrible; it bears no resemblance to the arcade version.

Nintendogs in particular is a sort of killer app for the DS; don't buy a different handheld without someone having showed you Nintendogs.

I went from a GBA to a PSP, and am glad I did.

Tools like PSPware make it a great platform for viewing fansubs (it plays standard MP4 videos and PSPware converts DIVX on the fly) - and the games I have are excellent (currently I'm working up the league tables in Wipeout Pure) - tho' I do have to admit to looking forward to the release of a couple of the big Japanese RPGs over the next three months...
