Of Urban Spelunking and Unhinged Loons...

I don’t have much time to dilly-dally tonight, so I’m going to make this relatively short.

On the G4 channel the other day, I saw this show called “G4 Underground”, profiling subcultures and the like all over America. The theme of this particular episode was “urban spelunking”, where people explore abandoned buildings and tunnels throughout cities. I was immediately skeptical of the mental sanity of whoever it was they were going to focus on for this documentary, but since I was too lazy to find the remote, I decided to keep watching. In essence, they profiled some nutjob who claims that “if you’re not constantly on the run from some authoritarian figure, you’re not living”. Wow. So apparently this guy thinks he needs to be the protagonist of most every futuristic movie ever made? The guy then goes around New York City exploring abandoned subway tunnels, and calling a drain in said tunnel “a real find”. After this, he goes off to some abandoned hospital on Staten Island and promptly gets kicked out by a roving cop. To cap things off, he goes that evening to a “secret” site, which he records only with his own camera in Paris Hilton-esque night vision. To his horror, he finds that his intended exit has been sealed off from the outside, and at this point I rejoiced momentarily, hoping that this idiot would end up trapped underground forever, like a Feral Ghoul in Fallout 3. Then I realized that if he hadn’t eventually come up to the surface, which he eventually did through another passageway, the G4 network would have never obtained this waste of good videotape.

Oh, how tired I am. All that stands between me and a weekend at the Viceroy downtown is six pages of a take-home final. In typical form, I’ll likely end up finishing it at 6:00 AM on Friday, just 90 minutes prior to the 7:30 AM due time. Wish me luck!

Till next time,
Juan
