So, as if in reply to
my last post, MuchMusic aired a Gwen Stefani concert last night. I watched a bit of it while flicking back and forth to something else.
A few things struck me:
1. Every song had a wardrobe change, which really proves
supermisty's point that it's about the style, not the music.
2. The Harajuku Girls are not only annoying, I also feel embarrassed for them. I'll never forget the time Gwen told a MuchMusic interviewer not to look directly at or speak to the H-Girls, "because they are figments of my [Gwen's] imagination."
3. I didn't recognize anyone in Gwen's backup band (whom I also feel embarrassed for) except
Gail Ann Dorsey, whose vocals and musicianship on bass guitar proved that she is 1000 times the live performer that Gwen is.
Having done some musical theatre, I can attest to the fact that it is difficult to sing and dance at the same time. My big gripe with Gwen (and many other performers) is when the songs are performed in another key or an octave (or two?) lower than what we get on the studio recording.
Maybe it isn't fair to compare Gail and Gwen. Gail doesn't have to skip around the stage in high-heeled shoes while singing and playing bass. But Gail's voice is more trained, more seasoned, more...just more, if you will.
Yeah, I'm a big Gwen Stefani party pooper.
I will give Gwen this: Her hair and makeup were flawless throughout the show. Her wardrobe was great.
I just wish her music lived up to her style.
