Chapter 1/1
It was a beautiful spring day. The birds were singing, the sky was blue, the grass was green and, the garden was ever wonderful and was being prepared for the wedding. The kiosk was ready, long white cloths snaking on every other pole that kept the dome hanging from the floor, the chairs were ready to be sat on, the musicians were practicing, everything was and must be set to its perfection for the wedding… A wedding that two families were brightly looking forward to, a wedding in which these two families would be bonded by a bond owed to not be broken by any circumstances; a wedding that four people never looked forward to.
The people were busy, scurrying around to get every little detail intact. Just in this room, there are women more that my fingers and toes, shoving things at me, making me choose if I want to wear what they have in her hands. I don’t even see my mother. Getting married is not exciting if people are unintentionally pressuring you. I guess I better live with it… This is going to be my future anyways; people are going to bulldoze questions into my head as if I could give them immediate answers while I walk down the streets peacefully, trying to live my life normally.
“Miss, which would you like to put on your hair?” A woman asks me, I look at the beautiful pieces to make a choice but someone interrupted. “This one’s really lovely milady,” The woman pointed to the item she liked, after that a whole bunch of other arms were stretched in front of my face and hands were pointing to the ones they chose for me. “Umm,” I tried to speak but it was obvious that no one was willing to listen. So, I stood up, “Look, I can’t wear everything you want me to put on! And besides, I’m the one who’s getting married here! If you want to wear something you push towards me without being polite, plan your own wedding! I’m not even a quarter ready, yet.” I walked to one of the windows. “We’re so sorry, Miss.” They say and bow in apology. “N-no… Just-just go. Leave. Die for all I care.” I shooed them away and they obediently complied.
“I see someone’s not in the best mood for their wedding,” I hear a familiar voice, by which means; I turn around and saw my mother. She walks inside, nearer to where I was. I greet her with a smile, a kiss and a warm hug. “You shouldn’t be grumpy on your wedding day,” She says and makes her way to the table, where the other women left the box full of hairclips. Her hand hovers over the little pieces, “I really like this one.” She takes one and shows it to me, it’s a feather. “This is the symbol for ‘freedom’ in tarot card reading.” She smiles at me and pins in on my bangs to keep them out of my face. “Let’s get you done we still have hours,” She smiles.
Yes, my mother reads tarot cards and that’s something she’s really proud of. She’s the one who brushes my hair all the time. She tells me stories just so she and I can spend some time together. She’s a great mom. She listens to me and understands what I’m saying and the best part is that she keeps them in mind. I can’t say that I hide things from her, that’s because I don’t. Well, there is one thing she doesn’t know about me.
“Your hair is so soft, dear,” She says, focusing on the strands she’s styling. “It’s been a while since I’ve touched your hair.” I can only look palely at the reflections in the mirror. “What’s wrong? Don’t you feel like getting married today?” My eyes went wide, that was what I was thinking of just now. “I’m right, aren’t I?” My face went soft, crescents played on both my eyes and on my lips, “You always are, Mom.” I say sighing. “Why are you like that?”
“I read tarot cards,” She answered. “Tarots are always right.” Enthusiastically, my mom says. I sigh, “It’s just that, I don’t feel like it today,” I said. “Oh? Then, shall we cancel the wedding and reschedule it?” She asked. “N-no… I wouldn’t want to waste other people’s efforts into making the place gorgeous,” I answered lazily. “Are you sure?”
“Of course, I am. Don’t worry mom.” I smiled at her. “Alright then,” She eyed me through the mirror then continued what she was doing with my hair.
The day was perfect, she was getting married. My best friend, who never gave ‘marriage’ a chance to cross her mind, is really getting married. It’s really unbelievable. I wanted to talk to her but… I heard that she was still getting ready. I wonder what I could do since I still have a few more hours till the wedding. Aish~
I went out the room I was just in, since it was boring and all. I want to do something… I walk down the wall-free hallway. I’m inhaling fresh air for a change. Being in the city is deadly, especially that too many people don’t get that much exercise like they should. They don’t realize that they’re the only ones killing themselves. Oh well, one person can’t change their minds. I’m not the one to blame for the loss of their lives. Looking around, I sighed. There was too much to appreciate in so little time, and her freedom only has a few hours left till it’s expired. I sighed and looked around, I saw another man holding two doves to be put in a cage. “This was really it,” I thought. I kept taking down the hall, finding busy people. The time was nearing.
The church bells were ringing, family and guests have gathered in the garden for the wonderful event, supposedly. She walked down the aisle that divided the guests into two groups. There was a bright smile on her face, it was sweet and sincere, a single trace of force wasn’t on the smile. I’m happy, she’s getting married. She’s going to be happy.
The groom took his bride’s extended hand and bowed to her parents before escorting her to the kiosk, where the priest was waiting. “Dearly beloved,” He started with a pleasant smile. “We have gathered here today to unite a couple in the endless shower blessings of God, our Father.” The ceremony continued, I watched with all the other guests. The couple looked lovely with each other. “Do you, Kim Gwiboon, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?” The priest asked.
“I do,” She answered looking him so tenderly straight in the eyes. “And do you, Kim Jonghyun, take this lovely young woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?” The priests’ compliment made Gwiboon giggle a little, and Jonghyun answered, “I do.” Gwiboon smiled even more. “With power vested in me, and by me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride,” With that, the couple united kissed… They might know; they might also not, that they’re hurting someone in the crowd.
It’s been almost a week since the wedding. Everything is going smoothly. Right now, my best friend and I are on our honeymoon, here in Saipan. The beaches are wonderful; the people are very friendly and hospitable, this place is perfect. We got to our date spot, a picnic under a big tree near the beach. “It’s so beautiful, isn’t it?” Gwiboon asked me. I nodded, it was really simple but she picked the perfect spot I would want to be. She’s still the same person… That’s good.
“I made your favorite for you today. A simple ham and cheese burger,” Gwiboon smiled as she said. “Really? That’s great Gwi,” I replied. “This place is wonderful, don’t you think? I’m really happy that I’m able to see this with you.” I kept looking at her, smiling. “I love you, Gwiboon.” She looked at me, “Are you sure?” She asked. The smile I had faded and looked down. I shook my head, “I… I don’t know.”
“‘I don’t know’ does mean you are unsure.” Gwiboon said, “Let’s stop kidding ourselves, Jjong.” She touched my hand, “We both know we’re not in love with each other.” All I can do was nod… She was right, “Who am I kidding? You’re my sister, my best friend.”
